100 Years of Chinese Studies at UH Mānoa

The University of Hawai'i and Global Chinese Studies Exhibit

The University of Hawai'i was one of the first institutions of higher education outside Asia to offer courses and degree programs in Chinese language, history, philosophy, and other fields. UH's commitment to Asian studies inspired many other US universities to diversify and globalize their programs.

An essential component to this work has been UH's outstanding library collection in Chinese materials. Thanks to generous investment by the people of Hawai'i, as well as expert curation by China bibliographers, our library collection has formed the foundation for research and teaching on China and Asia for over a century.

This online exhibit commemorates the centennial of Chinese studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. We focus on the first fifty years (1920-1970), highlighting the evolution of academic units, the contributions of faculty, and the creation of our library collection. We welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions, and hope that former students and UH faculty will share memories and contribute materials.

The organizers of this exhibit would like to express thanks for our opportunity to reside and work on the traditional ʻāina (homeland) of the Kanaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian) people. In presenting this project, we would like to highlight our gratitude for generations of scholars who have studied, taught, and lived in this sacred space. We hope to contribute to a conversation about the future of the University, and how study of Asia can contribute to the betterment of the people of Hawaiʻi.
