100 Years of Chinese Studies at UH Mānoa
The University of Hawai'i was one of the first institutions of higher education outside Asia to offer courses and degree programs in Chinese language, history, philosophy, and other fields. UH's commitment to Asian studies inspired many other US universities to diversify and globalize their programs.
An essential component to this work has been UH's outstanding library collection in Chinese materials. Thanks to generous investment by the people of Hawai'i, as well as expert curation by China bibliographers, our library collection has formed the foundation for research and teaching on China and Asia for over a century.
This website was created by faculty at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa to commemorate the centennial of Chinese studies at our university. We focus on the first fifty years (1920-1970), highlighting the evolution of academic units, the contributions of faculty, and the creation of our library collection. We welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions, and hope that other faculty and alumni will share memories and contribute materials.

The authors of this project express thanks for our opportunity to reside and work on the traditional ʻāina (homeland) of the Kanaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian) people. We gratefully recognize previous generations of scholars who have taught, conducted research, and been fortunate to live in this sacred place. We hope to contribute to conversations about the future of the University, and how the study of Asia contributes to the betterment of the people of Hawaiʻi.
