The Haverhill High School Band Program consists of three performing units-Concert, Jazz and Marching Bands and performs at Hillies sporting events, concerts, parades and other events in the Haverhill community.
Over the past year and a half pandemic we worked on our skills, performed in one live event (The Turkey Toss) and developed new studio skills working on several recording projects. We will emerge from the pandemic performing live again and looking forward to many new performances and experiences ahead!
In February, Haverhill band members in grades 5-12 joined forces to record a rockin' rendition of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water"
In April the HHS Band and Hillie Harmonies a Cappella group teamed up to record Journey's "Don't Stop Believin"
Our last live performance on February 26, 2020-two weeks before lockdown...Hillie Hockey action!
A very big "thank you" to John Sielicki (Matts' dad) for his dedicated (and dazzling!) videography over the past eight years-You rock Papa John!
Many thanks to Sue-Lynn Leung (Nick's mom) for her fantastic photography! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
HHS BAND SENIOR SHOWCASE
Michaela is a senior Jazz Band member and has been involved in the citywide band ever since the fifth grade. Her first instrument was the flute, and she went on to join the Jazz Band her freshman year. She has also been involved in performances like Mary Poppins and Footloose, where she performed in the pit orchestra. After playing the flute for several years, she taught herself how to play instruments like the alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, piccolo, and over quarantine, even the bass! Michaela put her love of jazz to work in her Classical Academy capstone presentation on the foundations of jazz and jazz composition. She plans on attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Commonwealth Honors College where she will major in Political Science and potentially continue her musical career in their band.
JARED plays the trumpet in the Haverhill High School Band. He has been a part of the band since 5th grade and has always been looking for ways to improve his skills. He joined the Jazz Band as a junior and has continued to be a part of it as a senior. After High school Jared intends to go to University of Massachusetts in Lowell to study Sound Engineering. He also plans to write music that inspires people and mostly feature the piano, guitar, and trumpet.
Nicholas Leung has been a part of the Haverhill Public School Band since the 5th grade where he first started playing alto saxophone at the Nettle Middle School. After learning the basics, in 6th grade he was invited to join the All City Haverhill Middle School Jazz Band, where he was exposed to jazz style music as well as more advanced techniques and was able to continue exploring his passions for music. Nick also furthered his skills and love of music by attending a high school band class as a middle schooler by taking the course in the morning before his middle school classes would start. This eventually would mature into the Fine Arts Loop Program. Once in high school, despite a very rigorous academic schedule, Nick was still able to pursue music through enrolling in the After-School Band program for all four years of high school. Other accomplishments that Nick has had throughout his high school career include holding positions as Sophomore Class President of the Class of 2021, Mayoral Appointment on the Haverhill Youth Council as well as National Honors Society President. Nick has also pursued his passions in the engineering related field through his position as Lead Builder on the Haverhill Robotics team and his enrollment in MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute to study satellite design. Nick will graduate as a part of the NAF Academy of IT, STEM Academy, Fine Arts academy with concentration in Music and as an Early College Scholar with plans to further his studies at Boston University majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace.
Zoe Martin first joined the Haverhill Band as a fifth grader in the A.B. Consentino school. She quickly distinguished herself as a dedicated and hard-working young musician and became the first Haverhill band member to be accepted into the middle school jazz band as a fifth grader. In high school Zoe has continued to distinguish herself as a musician, athlete and scholar. We wish Zoe continued success in all of her future endeavors.
Matthew Sielicki has been a dedicated member of the HHS band, and more importantly Jazz Band ever since the 5th grade. He has performed in almost every performance, pep band game, and concert in the high school. His musical abilities are not restricted to the band, though, for he has participated in the HHS Theatre's musical productions. And although COVID prevented us running a pit band for this year's musical Honk!, he has lent his talents into the field of sound tech and stage production. He hopes to continue his dedication to the arts at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, studying animation, film production, and hopefully more.
