About

History

The thought of a middle school drama club in Haverhill started back in 2014 at the Nettle Middle School.  The first show, Into the Woods Jr., was produced with a cast of talented Nettle Knights that ranged from grades 5 thru 8.

In 2021, Mr. K  joined the Hunking team and reunited with Mrs. Fairbrother.   As a team they decided to bring the theater experience back to Hunking and proceed with a plan to create a self-sustaining Drama Club.  Allowing students to become more confident not only on stage but with whatever life puts in front of them.

Purpose

The Broadway Bobcats is an after-school program offered to C.D. Hunking students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.  Students are introduced to Theatre Arts which includes topics such as Theatre history, acting, directing, production, playwriting, sound and lights, set design, costumes, make-up, and critical analysis.

Students actively explore perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation. The Program offers broad, unifying structures for organizing knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Through the drama club, students increase their understanding of self and others and develop clear ideas about the world. Through a variety of theatrical experiences, students communicate in a dramatic form, make artistic choices, solve problems, build positive self-concepts, and relate interpersonally. Students increase their understanding of heritage and traditions through historical and cultural studies in theatre. Student response and evaluation promote thinking and sound judgment, developing students who are appreciative of theatre, film, television, and other technologies.

Creative Team

Mr. K

Director/Producer

Mr. Kowalewski, Mr. K, graduated from Roger Williams University with a degree in Theater.  After spending some time working with different theater companies nationwide he took some time away. He is a Technology Teacher by day and a Theater Teacher, Director, and Actor after school.    His favorite productions he has been in would be "She Loves Me" and "Servant of Two Masters".  A great focus of Mr. K's is High Standards and High Expectations, while making tons of mistakes.

Mrs. Fairbrother

Musical Director/Producer

Mrs. Fairbrother graduated from UMass Lowell as a vocal major with a degree in Music Education.  She has been a director and musical director for more shows than she can count over her time in HPS.  She loves the magic of theater and the positive impacts it has on both the performers and community at large.  That being said though, she truly does it because it’s a whole lot of fun!
