Above artwork created by Jeremy Sicile-Kira, an Autistic non-verbal artist with synesthesia. He uses his synesthesia to create pieces like the one I used above, translating people's emotions and words into colors. You can view more of his work here.
Project Overview
In my experience in hospitals and psychiatric wards, patients often feel as if they have little to no control over their life or their treatment. Friends of mine who have spent time in psychiatric wards remember the experience as feeling like you are handing over all of your rights, decision making abilities, and bodily atonomy over to another facility. Multiple friends of mine, and myself, have had experiences where staff have lied to patients about their rights, the use of forms, etc.
I wish that I had known my rights when I was in the hospital -- I think it would have prevented a lot of harm. So I wanted to make that the focus of my final project. Below is a "Know Your Rights" infographic for patients in psychiatric wards.
Feel free to share the infographic if someone you know might benefit from it! Please note that it is specific to PA state policies and laws.
