We had a great time eating, listening to music, swimming, and hanging out with our friends on Monday afternoon! Thank you to everyone for providing a delicious plate of food for everyone to enjoy. I think we all ate far too much, but we enjoyed every bite!
We have been designing and creating our own board games during Maths time this week. Here the children are, hard at work!
We made our mammal dioramas on Wednesday afternoon and what fun we had!
Hot glue guns, PVA glue, paint, sand, and general mess ... the kids loved it!
A warm welcome to Lydia Kim who joined Room 9 on Monday. That takes us up to 29 children!
Congratulations to Petra and Liam for receiving certificates at our middle school assembly on Friday. You are both such hard workers and great thinkers!
Congratulations to Ammar and Cara for receiving certificates at this weeks whole school assembly!
We are having two sessions of Smash Tennis over the next couple of weeks.
Here are the children in action at their first session.
We have been focusing on key words during our writing and reading sessions this week, in preparation for information report writing next week. Here we are trying to match our pictures to the key words dotted around the room.
Congratulations to everyone for a wonderful athletics day!
Special congratulations to all the children who came first, second, or third in an event, we are all very proud of you!
Well done North house, who were the overall winners on the day!
Congratulations to Cara and Madison who competed for the school at a gymnastics competition on Wednesday. They both did very well, with Cara placing 2nd for her floor routine. We are very proud of you both!
On Thursday we went looking for patterns around the school. Here is what we found ...
Over the next two weeks we will be learning about Algebra during our maths sessions. On Wednesday the children worked with a partner to create a pattern using maths equipment. The other children in their group had to continue the pattern and decide what the rule was. Some children created a repeating pattern, e.g. blue, green, red, blue, green, red, etc. Some children came up with sequential patterns, e.g. 1 blue and 2 red, 2 blue and 3 red, 3 blue and 4 red, etc. Here are some photographs of our patterns.
Congratulations to Lilah and Sean for receiving certificates at the whole school assembly today. Very well deserved indeed!
Here is the homework for Week 4!
We had a visit from some Year 7 - Year 10 students from BIS and TGS on Thursday, promoting their performance based on the Dr Seuss books. It was certainly entertaining!
We have been learning about how to define and describe each of the main animal groupings this week. The children worked in small groups using an iPad and/or a dictionary and had to record their findings on the board. They worked very well together and came up with a list of characteristics for: amphibians, fish, mammals, reptiles, birds, and insects.
Here is the homework for Week 3!
We had a great time at the Auckland Zoo on Wednesday. Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers: Erin, Sienna, Lisa, Kristin, and Naglaa!
Here are a few photographs that I took during the day. Perhaps you could talk to your child about how you would classify each animal in the photographs, e.g. is it a reptile, bird, mammal, insect, amphibian, or fish?
As most of you know it's another 'testing' term. Testing will take place during Week 2 and Week 3, so if you could please make sure your child is at school every day during this time unless they are sick.
Congratulations to Dante and James for receiving certificates at this weeks whole school assembly!
What a great start to the term!
On Thursday afternoon we had a very special visit from Steve Hathaway, the ocean explorer and adventurer. He showed us some amazing photographs and footage that he'd taken from all around the world and told us about some of the incredible experiences he'd had while diving, photographing, and videoing marine life. This tied in beautifully with our Inquiry topic about mammals.
Along with his daughter, Riley, he has created a wonderful interactive website which the children (and parents) will love! The website link is below:
The Senior Kapa Haka group performed to welcome him. Here are a few photographs from the visit:
We had an unexpected, but welcome performance from the NZ Playhouse on Tuesday afternoon based on Little Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood. It was very funny and I'm sure the children would love to tell you about their favourite bits!
I promised the children I would put up a link to the Photographer of the Year 2018 photographs as we looked at some of them in class: www.nzgeo.com/photography/vote/
