Collaboration and Flexibility

At the start of the school year, it is important to support students' work habits in our STEAM classroom.  This means being able work in small groups, share ideas respectfully, and then allow our own plans to change as we take in new information.

Kindergarten

Our kindergarten students are learning about the weather and ways in which we can be prepared for weather using meteorologists' forecasts.  Enjoy asking your young weather-watcher what he or she would like to wear in order to be ready for the day's weather!

First Grade

What is sound?  How does sound move through the air?  How do people use sound for music as well as to communicate?  Our first-grade learners will explore these questions through hands-on demonstrations as well as by building their own drums.

Second Grade

Using our senses, especially those of sight and touch, our second graders are exploring the properties of solids.  We are thinking about properties including size, color, shape, texture and flexibility.   By naming solids' properties, we can then make plans about how to use those solids to solve engineering design challenges.

Third Grade

Let's play with some common childhood toys to learn about force and motion!  Our third grade engineers will learn about pushes, pulls, gravity, friction and other aspects of force as they think deeply about marbles, spinning tops, bubbles, and more.

Fourth Grade

Our fourth grade scientists are reviewing plant structures and their functions so that they can look deeper into the ways in which carnivorous plants, such as Venus Fly Traps, survive.  We will then transfer that knowledge to our learning about invasive plant species, including those in our own Hillside Woods.
