We had a great football season with nine cheerleaders this year. Next up is basketball! The HWC cheer team will be working on some routines to showcase during the season.
The FCCLA pie auction and FFA labor sale were a success raising money for both chapters and selling lots of delicious pies and hours of labor from the FFA students.
FFA just got back from the District 3 Leadership Conference in Rugby and we sent 8 freshmen. Those 8 freshmen were very busy with all of the events they did. Competing in the Creed Speaking LDE was Ian Haldorson. This includes reciting the 5 paragraph FFA Creed and then answering questions about its meaning. Ian placed 1st in the competition and will be competing at state on December 15th. Seven freshman members competed in the Conduct of Chapter Meetings LDE, which is parliamentary procedure for freshman, and the team earned a silver award. Members were: Carson Reimche-president-silver, Daizee Loen-vice president-silver, Ian Haldorson-secretary-silver, Tenley Grossman-treasurer-gold and officer of the day, Olivia Weinmann-reporter-gold, Brinlee Hase-sentinel-gold, and Ayla Held-student advisor. Elliot Krenzel competed in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking LDE. An article is chosen and he has 30 minutes to write a 4-6 minute speech. Elliot received a bronze award.
Receiving bronze awards in the Greenhand Quiz contest were: Carson Reimche, Daizee Loen, Tenley Grossman, Olivia Weinmann, Brinlee Hase, and Elliot Krenzel. Receiving a silver award was Ian Haldorson. As a team they earned a silver award.
Peer 2 Peer participated in Trunk-or-Treat this year, which was so much fun. In class, we have watched some movies and clips focusing on those with disabilities. We have learned how to talk about and talk to those with disabilities. Also, we have discussed what their lives may look like, learning how to help them and involve them in what us non-disabled or people without disabilities may find easy and fun to do.
We are now reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio and are incorporating it into what we are learning and what we might do or change when we meet our mentees and become mentors. We are also having a movie night at the high school this Friday, the 21st of November, watching Gifted, and of course including all sorts of different people into our coffee shop in the high school.
Peer 2 Peer Member Shiane Thompson
Girls Basketball started November 17. Their first game is December 2 in Fessenden.
Boys Basketball will start December 1.
In our anatomy class, we did a compact bone project and did stations where we labeled the human skeleton bones. For the compact bone project, we made a replica of what it would look like using paper, beads, seeds, and so much more! We also have a huge test coming up soon in Anatomy as well, hopefully we all do well on it! In college English, we are almost done with the book, The Book Thief. I am excited and nervous for the end of the book!
The election was really fun to help with, and it was cool to see as well. I helped make some posters for the campaign. The senior class has been going head to head with an election that recently took place. The stakes and tension has been through the roof with campaigning and supporting your fellow candidates while still running your own campaign. The POD class has been working hard the past 2-3 weeks on getting their things ready for the debate. Each candidate had to write a speech for the debate and put posters around the school to tell students what they would improve. The debate took place in the gym during homeroom on the 18th of November. Voting took place the next day during lunch hour where all students and faculty could vote for the candidate they chose. The candidates were Casserly/Odendaal, Feist/Graumann, Richter/Eckart, Marmon/Duncan.The winner of the election is … Jaxon Feist for President and Franklin Graumann for VP.
We also went to the T4 Summit at Dakota College in Bottineau, where we got to learn about a lot of amazing programs. My favorite one was probably the one with the electrical currents, and we got to make one with everyone in our group. In FCCLA, we are starting our STAR Events, which is really fun!
During the past few weeks the senior class has been making big decisions on where we want to go for our senior class trip and working on ideas on when and what we want to do for our fundraiser.
The school is working on fundraisers for Miss Edyn. She is one of our teachers' daughters. She is 5 weeks old and is facing HLHS. For those who do not know what that is, it is when the heart does not form properly and only has 3 of the 4 ventricles. This causes the heart to not be able to pump blood to the body effectively. She had her first of 3 surgeries not long after being born. She will have her next surgery in a few months and for the time being Edyn Storbeck and Mrs. Corbin Storbeck will be staying at the Aurora children's hospital in Denver, Colorado. The school has a fundraiser to help support the Storbecks though this hardship they are facing. The school is doing a fundraiser to help the Storbecks. We are selling shirts and sweatshirts.

This year I ran for school president. My campaign focused not only on making the school a better place for students, but for staff as well. Some of my campaign topics were a vending machine with snacks, teachers having a longer prep time, and early out on Fridays @2:30.
Even though I did not win, I had an amazing time, between the campaigning and enjoying my time with the amazing team I had. I want to give a massive thank you to my vice president, Anke Odendaal, for all the hard work and help. Thank you to my campaign team as well for making the posters.
Candidate Katherine C
Running for HHS President made me really sit back and observe the school and try to find the underlying problems. My group decided to target the issues of students not being able to wear jackets or backpacks during school hours, adding more drinks and snacks to the vending machine, and having Tyler Rispa become the Student Resource Officer.
To campaign we sent out a survey and got 140 responses, and used these responses to determine what the students wanted, and we created posters to hang around the school in an attempt to get more votes.
*yes, Tyler knows his name is spelled wrong
Candidate Frank R
We wanted our presidential campaign to stand out among the usual topics people cover- slow internet, snacks in vending machines, and poor bathroom privacy. In order to do that, me, my vice president Alice Duncan and the other contributors in my cabinet decided to put an emphasis on the invisible issues here at Harvey High: students not having the motivation to learn or take care of themselves, and the hostile social environment created by poor mental health and an over-dependence on technology. Despite my campaign being distinguishable from the arguments given by the other three candidates, I only came in second place with electoral votes.
Perhaps it was because Jaxon wore a bow-tie. Either way, I'm not bitter. The other candidates spoke on the problems that matter to them, and they gave great reasons for their concerns! The election was a fun, educational experience and it brought some very real issues to light.
I had so much fun in fact that I'm considering running again in 2044... I'll wear a bow-tie next time.
Candidate Evy M
Our campaign focus was the problems that we had heard from students. The biggest idea we had was more targeted to athletes as we wanted to update the weight room. We felt with the new move of our athletics going to class A, updating our weight room felt like a must to be able to compete with these bigger schools.
Next was something that affects every student in Harvey High School which is the locker room bathrooms. Both stalls lack a door and are not the cleanest with how old they are. Every student at Harvey is required to have a gym class at least once so every kid uses the locker rooms. We wanted the students to feel like we were representing them and we must have done a pretty good job.
President Jaxon F
The Juniors sure have been busy bees this month! The chemistry class finished their unit on the periodic table and discovered that the best replacement for tin in tin cans would most likely be aluminum based on many elemental factors. Now they will move onto their next unit exploring elemental compounds and different kinds of bonds. In Ag 3, the juniors are currently building bedside tables! If you ordered fruit, cheese, meat sticks, or nuts from any FFA kids, they should be delivered November 24th.
The juniors finished their book The Glass Castle in English class and after their test over the book, they got to enjoy a movie. In cybersecurity, they are learning about the components of websites and how a hacker would be able to attack a computer through each part. Though we have many tests and assignments, we know it just means we are getting closer to the end of this semester and most importantly, our 2 WEEK WINTER BREAK. Winter break officially starts Monday the 22nd, so the last day of school in 2025 will be December 19th! School will resume January 5th.
Many Junior students can be spotted on the basketball court or the wrestling mat!Now that fall sports are officially over, winter sports are kicking in as boys and girls wrestling has already started November 10th and girls and boys basketball started November 17th! Check the school website for upcoming games under the events tab. Don't let the snow shut you inside your home, come out and watch the hornets this winter as it's sure to be a thrilling season!
The junior craft fair was last weekend and there was a great turnout! They had a full gym of vendors selling their products including dolls, baked goods, lip balms, decorations, and freeze-dried candy. The juniors helped vendors set up and take down, served food in the kitchen, and moved tables.
The HHS student council is starting to look to Christmas break, getting back into Friday morning meetings to start planning festivities for the week before break. The National Honors Society is also planning their annual blood drive for November 26th for those that want to give blood. The students will be checking people in and bringing bars for an after-donating snack!
From the Junior class - For Thanksgiving we want to give thanks to all the amazing community members who came to the craft fair and for all of those who supported us through our fall sports season! We hope to see you throughout the winter sports!

November is coming to an end and surprisingly there is still no snow. Not much has happened this month but fortunately Christmas is just around the corner. You can just tell when an event is coming up once student council meetings start up again. I wonder what games and crafts will be made up this year? On November 20 Mrs. Walsh’s Foods class worked extremely hard to prepare and host a Thanksgiving dinner. This dinner included some special guests like Mr. Loff, Dennis Walsh, and the teacher herself, Mrs. Walsh. We spent weeks preparing and it turned out to be a success. Math, English, Science, and History haven’t changed too much this past month. In English we have moved on from the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” and we are now reading short stories.
Math is the same old lessons we have been doing for years and we have just finished up a project in History for Mr. Rask about the impact of exploration. Mrs. Buchmiller finally figured out her note taking system which is a good thing for her but not her students. In Ag we have finally gotten to woodworking after all the in classroom activities. We are making garbage cans to throw away all our useless homework.
FFA in Rugby was a blast, Rebekah and Ellamae did their demonstration project and placed third (gold) along with many others. To get in the Christmas spirit student council members have set up the HWC themed Christmas tree to kickstart December (and the end of November).
Sophomore Reporters: Aubrie S, Rebekah S
The freshman class is just finishing up Romeo and Juliet, and are now preparing to take a test on the book. Everyone is stressing over math where we are starting to learn proofs in Geometry. Let’s just say it’s not as easy as we thought it would be. In science class, Mrs. Ketterling is having us build cars with an eggstra special passenger. The cars have to roll down a ramp and hit a cinder block while protecting an egg. And remember to stop by the office to order a T-shirt for the Storbeck’s baby. All proceeds will go to them.
Mr. Guzman has everyone practicing hard for our Christmas concert on the first of December where the band will play along with the choir for the first time ever. Our Student Council is starting to discuss plans for our Christmas events, so be ready for a fun December.
Freshman Reporters: Ian H, Josie F
So far this school year has been doing pretty good. Whether you are trying to get all of your math homework done or catching up on English. With everybody working so hard we have all been doing much better and working better as a team and a class overall.
Right now in English class we are learning the parts of speech… Some are enjoying it and others hate grammar. It doesn’t matter what you think, we keep on learning. English has also been quite fun lately with both of our English classes being able to play blookets on grammar which is a great way to engage us and help us enjoy school a lot more.
Science has been a very fun year for the 8th grade class with all of the projects we have been doing and working on really has taught us a lot about science. Some of the projects we have been doing this year are a mineral lab which was all about investigating and researching a mineral. Other projects included working with soil and water.
Our field trip to Bottineau was actually quite the interesting trip, we learned a lot about technology, teamwork, and different occupations. Some of us were expiring job simulators about construction. Well others were learning about medical fields or any job imagable. It was a very enjoyable trip to be on.
Mr. Guazman has been working hard to make sure that this year's concert is great. For every grade, but especially the 8th grade. With the concert coming up in less than a month we are memorizing all of our songs from Hawaiian roller coaster to Christmas songs and even our very own song of choice. We are all very excited to perform, so come on December 1st and support our choir.

The seventh graders are studying for tests this week. We have a test in science on meiosis and mitosis. In Mr. Schuh's class we have had many tests and more to come on all the states in the U.S., and had a test on Nov 20. In Mr. Anderson’s class we are reading the book refugee, it is about 3 different people trying to get to somewhere better. Lastly, the seventh graders are studying for a math test too. For sports girls basketball has started and boys basketball starts Dec 1. Us seventh graders sure have been very busy in November.
