Hartley Primary Academy Newsletter
December 2022
Principal's Welcome
Dear Parents/Carers,
Well, we've made it to the end of a very busy term, battling with a million germs, ice and snow, dodgy boilers and some very excited children who can't wait for Christmas!
Despite all of the challenges and most of the school community being ill at some point, we have still had a great term with lots of brilliant achievements and fun activities too!
Year 1 went to the theatre to see 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea', Year 5 went to Lullingstone Roman Villa, many Year 6s did their Bikeability course and passed with flying colours, Reception have had six Forest School sessions with our ranger Donna from Lullingstone Country Park as well as taking walks around our local area and every year group from Reception to Year 6 has put on some sort of Christmas performance - we've certainly been busy!
In addition to this, as a community, we have raised lots of money for some very worthwhile charities, including Children in Need, The Altzeimer's Society and The Royal British Legion. The PTA organised an amazing Christmas market and with your help and support have raised lots of money for the school, so thank you for your donations and for coming and joining in with the fun and spending all of your money on all of the stalls!
The staff at HPA would like to wish all of our families a very Merry Christmas, if you celebrate it, and we send you our best wishes for 2023. Have a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you all back on Thursday 5th January.
Kind regards,
Nicole Galinis
Principal
Staffing update
Sadly we are saying goodbye to Mrs Creed who is about to start her new role at Milestone Academy - we wish her lots of luck with her new job and hope she will pop back and see us from time to time - she will only be up the road and still working for a Trust school afterall!
We have also said farewell to Elishia in Nursery, who is already busy in her new job and getting ready for the new nursery she is working at to open in January. Caroline has taken over as Manager - Congratulations Caroline!
And we have a new Nursery Assistant, Nicola Crane, and a new TA, Heidi Baxter-Smith, in Key Stage 1, both starting in January - welcome to the team Heidi and Nicola!
Family Liaison Officer (FLO)
Lisa Barton, our new FLO and Attendance Officer has been with us for a few weeks now and settling well into her role. You will probably have seen her meeting and greeting parents on the top playground each morning. Mrs Barton is available for parents/carers who may need some support. You can make an appointment to see her through the FLO email address (flo@hartleyprimary.org.uk) or by catching her on the playground in the mornings. Equally, any attendance and absence information should be emailed to attendance@hartleyprimary.org.uk
Mrs Barton will be hosting a coffee morning from 8.45 to 9.45am on Wednesday 11th January in the school hall, so that you can come along and meet her, enjoy a hot drink, biscuits and a chat and hear about some of the ways Mrs Barton will be able to help our families.
Urgent - MyChildAtSchool
Currently about half of our parents/carers have signed up to use MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) to receive information . As of the end of January (Monday 30th January) MCAS will be our main form of communication and we will no longer be sending texts and emails. If you have not already signed up please do so as soon as possible and before Monday 30th January. Please email office@hartleyprimary.org.uk if you are unsure about how to do this and Mrs Coe will assist you. Thank you.

Charity Events
Armistice Day
This year we all managed to raise £220.16 for the Poppy Appeal, through the sale of poppies and other poppy merchandise. A huge well done to our school councilors who went around the school selling items from the Royal British Legion. Our reception children went down to visit the war memorial and look at the poppy display there and Miss Lawford ran an assembly to explain the meaning behind Armistice Day and Rememberance Sunday to the children and we all had a minute's silence at 11am on 11th November to show our respect for the fallen soldiers and those who fought in the wars. There was also lots of lovely activities taking place around the school, including lots of clay and paper poppies which have since been decorating our classrooms.
Children in Need
Children in Need was, once again, a huge success at HPA. The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in their yellow, spotty, Pudsey outfits, searching for Pudsey and Blush in the woods and joining in with their welly walk! Altogether we raised £354.13. Thank you all for your continued support.
Elf Day
Yet another successful fundraising event - this time for The Alzheimer's Society. Our children looked amazingly elftastic and we managed to raise £357.30! Thank you so much for your support.
Hartley PTA Christmas Fair
A huge thank you to our PTA who organised a wonderful Christmas fair on the 3rd December; the school was full of Christmas cheer (and the smell of 'Dutch pancakes' from the candy floss stall). It was lovely to see so many of our families, both past and present, throughout the day meeting Santa, visiting the secret present room, the Elves' workshop and the stalls in the main hall. Congratulations to Mrs Welch and the school choir who sung some wonderful Christmas songs and carols during the afternoon. The final amount that you all helped raise for the PTA was an incredible £1566!
Christmas Productions & Carol Concerts
Throughout last week the children have been able to perform their Christmas productions and carol concerts both to the rest of the school, and to their adults. The week, which started with the Monday snow day scuppering some of the dress rehearsal plans, started with our youngest children in Reception performing 'Tinsel'. The confidence these children showed was stunning and the 'cute-factor' through the roof! Years One and Two then had their turn at showing 'Christmas with the Aliens'; the singing, dancing and speaking in this was amazing and the costumes really made the show! The week finished with carol concerts from Years Three and Five on Thursday, and Years Four and Six on Friday. The children sung beautifully and it was lovely to see the year groups working with those that they might not normally get the opportunity to do. A big thank you to all the parents/carers who helped with learning words/making costumes and also to the teachers and TAs for putting these experiences together for the children.
LAT Swimming Gala
On 22nd November, Four of our Year 5/6 pupils went to the Leigh Academies Trust Swim Gala, held at Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School. They achieved a fabulous 2nd place out of 15 other Primary schools! We came 1st in backstroke, 2nd in the relay and 4th in freestyle; an amazing achievement and we look forward to future events.
NSPCC: Speak Out. Stay Safe. Assembly
All of the children in Key Stage One and Two took part in a special assembly organised and delivered by the NSPCC which was called Speak out. Stay Safe. The assembly aimed to make children aware of the types of abuse, recognise that abuse is never ok and the importance of speaking out to help them stay safe. The children listened and responded so well to the assemblies and hopefully this has given them more awareness of the importance of speaking out to a trusted adult if anything is ever worrying or upsetting them.
It’s not just a game!
Christmas is often a time when more board games make an appearance - remember they are great to help children to think for themselves, learn cooperation and teamwork skills, to work on strategies and tactics, and learn how to hold a conversation with other adults. Games are a fun way of getting your child to learn – without them even realising it! Games, such as draughts, dominoes, Connect4 and card games are not only terrific fun but they are also challenging and involve concentration and strategy.
Get game-playing into your weekly routine. Find an ideal time for the whole family to sit together and play some games. Sundays are often good or the holidays.
Add some elements to help ‘game time’ become a family tradition, such as favourite foods (bowls of popcorn or hot drinks), a comfortable, warm setting and inviting grandparents, other relations and friends over to get lots of people involved.
Start with games that are suited to the youngest age group present, or have a few games going at the same time that fit the various age ranges. Make sure everyone understands the rules and aims of the game being played and stick to them.
Explain that to enjoy playing games we all have to play by the rules, respect our partners and respect the outcome of the game.
Show your own interest and enthusiasm for the game, give it concentration and effort, both for your own enjoyment, and also as a role model for your children. Discuss the moves you are making and ask open questions such as, “What are all the different options you have?” or “What would happen if you take that move?”
Whether your child wins or loses, at the end of the game summarise what you learnt from the game and then ask your child, “What did you learn from that game?” or “What might you do differently next time we play?”
Attendance
At Hartley, our school attendance target is 96%. Research suggests that even missing a little bit of school year on year, children can leave school with lower opportunities than they are capable of. As a school we strive to give children the best chance in life and this includes encouraging excellent attendance.
Attendance is monitored on a daily basis, and we send parents and carers a letter if their child’s attendance causes concern. Parents may also be requested to attend a meeting at school about attendance if this fails to improve.
If your child is ill, please telephone school before 9.00am on the first day with the reason for your child’s absence and continue to report their absence if they are absent for further days. This applies regardless of type of illness (sickness included even though we will assume they will be off for 48 hours we do need confirmation please). Please also make sure you tell us the names of all of your children who will be off sick - sometimes we get a message about one but not about the older/younger sibling! Whether you email or leave a message on the absence line, please give details of the illness, rather than saying they are 'poorly' or 'unwell' - we need this information for our records. Any voice messages left on the absence line should be clear and concise and state your child's name, class and reason for absence. Thank you.
In line with the Government Guidelines, term-time holidays will not be authorised, unless there are exceptional circumstances. If you are wishing to take a holiday during term time please write to us beforehand. Please note parents could receive a fine for taking children out of school for holidays.
School must be informed of any medical or dental appointments and evidence may be requested. Please email attendance@hartleyprimary.org.uk or phone school to arrange this prior to the appointment.
Punctuality is also important. Every day, between 8.45 and 9.00am, children have either ‘early work’ or in some cases intervention groups. It is extremely important that children arrive on time at school. Children who arrive after 8.45am must be signed into school by a parent/carer, via the School Office.
Just a gentle reminder about our Home school Agreement!
We often have parents raising issues about uniform requirements, receiving letters about attendance and issues relating to behaviour sanctions. As part of our Home School Agreement all parents have agreed to support the school's behaviour and uniform policies and aim for their children to have excellent attendance at school.
Free School Meals
If your child is under 19 and in full-time education, you may be able to get free school meals for them if you receive certain benefits. The quickest and easiest way to check whether your child is eligible for free school meals and to apply is via the KCC website:
https://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals
If your child is already registered for free school meals, you do not need to reapply. If you’re not sure whether your child is already registered, please call the school and we can check our records, or you can contact KCC on 03000 416464.
