About Me

My name is Ashley Benz, I am currently in my 10th year in education! After graduating from the University of Sioux Falls I started my career teaching 4th grade at Pettigrew Elementary in Sioux Falls. In 2011, I decided to go back to school to get my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with and emphasis in technology.

In 2014, I accepted a 4th grade position here at HMS that I did for 2 years until jumping into a new adventure as the Instructional Coach. This is a position that continues to evolve, but most of my day is spent collaborating with teachers and students in the areas of literacy and technology.

Helping inspire others to embrace life-long learning is truly a passion of mine. I absolutely love learning and collaborating with colleagues and find myself signing up for continuing education classes often. I have learned that to be the best educator I can, I need to continue to embrace and reflect on new teaching practices daily/weekly/yearly.

My Top 5 Beliefs about Education

1. Positive relationships among all members of the learning community form the foundation upon which students and staff feel safe and comfortable to take risks in their learning.

2. Every individual, young or old, is capable of learning and growing.

3. As teachers and leaders, it is our responsibility to help learners identify their strengths and then use those strengths to take on new learning experiences.

4. If someone is not learning the way I am teaching, the way I teach needs to change.

5. We are better together than alone. Collaboration should be a natural part of our learning community for both staff and students. It truly takes a village!

****Positivity spreads like wildfire, be the smile that brightens another persons day!

When I am not at school I am usually spending time with my husband (Jesse) and our two beautiful children, Alayna (8) and Hayden (6).
