We are really looking forward to you joining us at Hartlepool Sixth Form to Study Chemistry in September.
Never before have Y11 students had such a great opportunity to get ahead for their A level courses. Here's how you can do it for Chemistry!
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds. These are vital in every aspect of modern day life as they are involved in things such as pharmaceuticals, fuels, plastics, agricultural chemicals, dyes, detergents and cosmetics to name a few!
Carbon is so special in the way it can bond to itself. Since it is in group 4 of the periodic table, carbon is able to form 4 covalent bonds to other atoms including itself. This enables it to form many different types of compound. To date there are over nine million known organic compounds!
Here's what we'd like you to find out ...
What we mean by functional groups and homologous series
The different types of organic fomulae used in Chemistry
Some of the key terms used in organic chemistry
How we name the alkanes
How we name the alkenes
How we name the alcohols
How we name the halogenoalkanes (a.k.a. haloalkanes)
Examples of other functional groups
Research some organic compounds e.g. a pharmaceutical molecule or a drug molecule and try to link what you have learnt to the molecule. Maybe find out it's chemical name (systematic name) and see if you can link it to the structure, can you identify any functional groups, is it aliphatic or aromatic, saturated or unsaturated etc.
Here are some videos to watch to help you along the way ...
Organic functional groups and homologous series
Organic formulae
Naming alkanes
Naming alkenes
Naming alcohols
Naming halogenoalkanes
Organic families song
Key organic terms
Here are some other resources to help you ...
We'd like you to produce a report on your research into the the report should be 1000 – 2000 words. You should keep a record of all of your sources of information as you go and make sure to reference all the resources you use along the way.
EXTRA TASK
Hopefully you have got you head around all things organic functional groups so how about an extra task linked to coronavirus?
Click on the links below for hand sanitisers and four ways to destroy coronavirus and list as many organic functional groups covered as you can
