Introduction

Hello!

My name is Keiron Braithwaite and I teach GCSE Mathematics & BTEC Engineering. I look forward to meeting you later this year when you start the next stage of your education at Hartlepool Sixth Form. In the meantime, have a look at each task and if you have any problems or just need to ask me a question then please contact me using my email -

I’m glad you have chosen this project. It’s designed for those who like drawing but also for those who might just wish to maintain or improve their level of mathematical drawing skills between now and starting college later this year. It involves drawing lots of familiar and unfamiliar shapes including curves. Many shapes will be constructed about a pair of axes, whilst others on simple centimetre square or isometric dotty grids. Some involve drawing tessellations on a blank background. The designs you will be required to draw may involve ‘similar’ objects (all corresponding sides being in proportion) and others will use ‘congruent’ shapes (identical in every way). Whether you consider yourself to be artistic or not you will be able to draw most of these tasks as they only require just the very basic drawing skills required for GCSE using the equipment which you would use in any Mathematics exam. As this task is all about shape, it will help you should you need to either resit your GCSE or even if you decide you are going to study maths at a higher level. As an added bonus there is an element of mindfulness about this activity and you should find it calming and relaxing during present circumstances.

  • This project consists of nine tasks.

  • Each will require you to draw different designs according to a set of instructions with each having a YouTube tutorial(s) for help.

  • You will only need paper, drawing & colouring pencils, mathematical equipment (ruler, pair of compasses, protractor) and possibly an eraser! You might be lucky enough to have software you can use instead of using traditional paper and pencil drawing methods.

  • Try to keep a collection of your drawings ready to hand in to me in September.

  • You will be awarded a Certificate of Completion for doing so and there will be a prize for the best overall designs.

Most tasks can be drawn on blank paper but some require certain backgrounds so click on the links below so that you can print whatever you need-
