How is PoG connected to Math?

A strong education in Math will supply students at Hartford Public Schools with a foundation to make sense of real world problems as informed citizens when they encounter them. They must understand not only the process for solving problems but also have an understanding of how and why the process works so that they can persevere in solving new challenges as problem solvers. Additionally, by teaching students to support their reasoning and look to the reasoning of others to expand their understanding, they become innovative thinkers in and out of the classroom.

Looking for and making use of structure and literary devices can help make students effective problem solvers. Exposure to a range of authors, genres, and perspectives will help develop a love a reading and will help make students informed and engaged citizens as well as innovative thinkers.

How is PoG connected to ELA?

Writing is a form of expression that helps people communicate thoughts through various methods, both subtle and direct. It is not only about finding the right words, but setting a tone and using literary devices to allow the reader to see the world from the author’s viewpoint. Helping students achieve literacy proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking throughout their time at Hartford Public Schools will prepare all students to graduate with literacy and language expertise that will allow them to transform our communities and beyond.

STEM

How does PoG Connect to the Classroom?

Learning about climate change, health, medicine, the human body, and energy all help make students informed and engaged citizens. Participating in  group lab work and completing lab reports across a range of topics helps make students team players and skilled communicators. Working to solve scientific challenges both in and out of the classroom helps make students problem solvers and innovative thinkers.

A high-quality science education means that students will develop an in-depth understanding of content and develop key skills—communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving, and flexibility—that will serve them throughout their educational and professional lives.  Hartford Public School students actively engage in the practices of science and engineering in order to develop a deep understanding of the disciplinary core ideas and the cross-cutting concepts. As a result, they will develop the thinking skills required to be critical consumers of scientific information related to their everyday lives, engage in public discussion on science related issues, and continue to learn about science throughout their lives.

The Arts: Visual Art, Music and Dance

How does PoG Connect to the Classroom?

Visual art, music and dance are just some forms of expressive communication. Learning about how to use each medium will  help students best express what message they are trying to relay to their audience.  Researching artists, dancers and performers and their work will help students understand the material from the artist’s perspective and how it relates to the artist’s intent. Critiques of established artists as well as fellow students’ work will help students to verbalize how they engage with the art and how it relates to them and/or society.

Self-expression is a way to communicate your response to the world around you to an audience. The Arts: Visual Arts, Music and Dance are all very expressive and powerful ways to communicate, and also very universally translated. The arts rarely rely on a specific verbal language to be used and understood, so every audience member can interpret and bring their own meaning and understanding to the work, making it a very powerful form of communication and societal engagement.


Health

How does PoG Connect to the Classroom?

Having students learn about how physical health plays a big part in mental health and social functioning is supports skills such as innovative thinking, problem solving and being and an informed and engaged citizen.  Teaching the students that there are resources and people available when you need help will reinforce their problem solving and communication skills, as well as being a team player.


How is PoG connected to Health?

Taking care of our mind, body and emotional health helps us manage our happiness and relationships. Topics that deal with self-management and mental and emotional health are strongly rooted in being an Informed and Engaged Citizen: recognizing the healthy ways to interact with others rely on being a Skilled Communicator as well as working through interactions and difficulties through Team Work, Problem Solving and Innovative Thinking.
