Canyon AP Chemistry

Welcome to the Canyon's AP Chemistry Website!

AP Chemistry is an introductory college-level chemistry course. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry through inquiry-based lab investigations as they explore the four Big Ideas: scale, proportion, and quantity; structure and properties of substances; transformations; and energy. (College Board)

Skills You Will Learn Through This Course:

  • Designing experiments and procedures to test a prediction or theory
  • Creating graphs, diagrams, and models that represent chemical phenomena
  • Explaining how the microscopic structure of a substance determines its chemical properties
  • Balancing a chemical equation
  • Making a scientific claim and supporting it with evidence

Exam Date: AP Chemistry Exam

  • Thu, May 9, 2020
  • 8 AM Local
  • Location: Canyon Gym

Course Content

Units and Topics we will cover (*not necessarily in this order*)

  • Atomic Structure and Properties
  • Molecular and Ionic Compound Structures and Properties
  • Intermolecular Forces and Properties

Big Ideas:

As we progress through the units, the Big Ideas are the four foundation blocks that will help thread the topics and lessons together for a deeper conceptual understanding

  1. Scale Proportion and Quantity (SPQ)
  2. Structure and Properties (SAP)
  3. Transformations
  4. Energy (ENE)
