“Opening up about my own struggles taught me that none of us are truly alone,” said Love. “Talking to someone, whether it’s a coach, a teammate, a friend, or a counselor can be the first step toward healing. That’s why I’m proud to support the CalHOPE Courage Award Scholarship Program, which shows young people that true courage comes from sharing your story and seeking help.”
All California high school ADs, athletic administrators and coaches are encouraged to share this exciting new program with their student-athletes and school counselors. The application is open now and scholarships will be awarded through June 2026.
Honorees will earn a $2,500 scholarship, and their comeback story—whether from injury, illness, family hardship, academic pressure, or other stressors—will be shared to inspire and encourage peers facing similar challenges. Their high schools will also receive a $500 donation to support other student-athletes.
The first 15 student-athletes to be recognized include: Anny Ambrosio (swimming, San Pedro, H.S); Eusebio Andrade-Flores (soccer, Ukiah H.S); Grace Clark (Hollister H.S); Gracianna DeFina (volleyball, Justin Siena H.S); Jasiel Estrada (tennis, Live Oak H.S); Noa Eteauti-Edwards (basketball/track, Arcadia H.S); Destiny Finley (basketball, San Lorenzo H.S); Caiden Garcia (wrestling, La Cañada H.S); Julian Lara (soccer, Orosi H.S); Jaslene Massey (track/volleyball, Aliso Niguel H.S.); Andrea Mata Alejo (basketball/volleyball, Luis Valdez Leadership Academy); Rafiq Randall Jr. (football/track, Steele Canyon H.S); Janie Trottier (flag football/basketball, California H.S); Carter Upton (basketball, Agoura H.S); and Nathan Woods (cross-country, Crawford H.S).

On behalf of the Santa Clarita Valley Bar Association, we are excited to announce our 13th Annual High School Speech Competition for juniors and seniors in the William S. Hart Union High School District.
The competition will be held on April 16, 2026 at Castaic High School (details included in the attached flyer), and participating students will have the opportunity to compete for cash scholarships and present before a panel of Los Angeles County Superior Court judges. The top three scoring students in the competition will be awarded cash scholarships and will also be personally recognized, as our guest, at a Scholars & Bench Night event to be held on May 21, 2026 at The Oaks Club.
Attached to this email, you will find the following documents:
• The event flyer
• The student application
• The scoring rubric
This year’s prompt is: “Since the establishment of the United States Supreme Court in 1789, which Justice has had the greatest impact, and why?”
We kindly ask that you please distribute these materials to your junior and senior students. We have discovered that teachers of English, History and Social Studies related classes (as well as Speech & Debate) are most helpful and effective in making students aware of the competition, as well as encouraging them to participate! I would also ask if your teachers/staff could post the flyers in their classrooms to increase student awareness of the event.
Additionally, anyone is invited to attend and observe the event.
We will also be delivering a couple of posters to each campus for display in visible areas to help promote the event.
Students can send their applications directly to us, along with their essay submissions, and we will handle all follow-up.
We truly appreciate your continued partnership and support in providing this opportunity for your students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Warm regards,
Sarah Hunt | Santa Clarita Valley Bar Association

APYLP 2026 High School Conference
The annual Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project (APYLP) conference provides a select group of 60 Asian and Pacific Islander seniors and juniors from public, private and charter high schools throughout California with a unique opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative process, community leadership, and political activism. During the four-day, three-night conference, students will participate in a Mock Legislature at the State Capitol that includes the election of peer legislative leaders, lively debate of current issues through the introduction of legislation, and the lobbying of bills during committee hearings and the Senate floor session. Additionally, small group workshops facilitated by Asian Pacific legislative staff, community activists, and business leaders will assist students in developing their leadership and public speaking skills, enhance their cultural awareness and identity, and explore the richness and diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in California.
The conference is open to junior and senior students that reside in and attend a California high school.
The APYLP conference days will be on Thursday, March 26, 2026 to Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Sacramento, CA. All conference costs are covered for accepted applicants.
