International Day of Mathematics

The International Day of Mathematics is a worldwide celebration taking place on 14 March, designed to break down the walls which prevent people of all backgrounds from getting involved in mathematics and having exposure to fun ways of exploring the subject. The theme of this year’s event is ‘mathematics for everyone’, and the day looks to democratise maths education and challenge perceptions which suggest that mathematics can be enjoyed only by geniuses and the naturally gifted.

World Book Day 2023

Harrow High School took part in World Book Day on Friday 3 March 2023. Learners were invited to dress up as their favourite book characters and enter a costume competition which was organised by Mr Katbamna, Ms Grunwald and Mr Desai.

Many Year 7, 8 and 9 learners enjoyed taking part in activities during the day. Thanks to the efforts of the learners, the catwalk costume competition held in the library was a huge success and everyone had fun during the two competition events.

The costumes were exciting and carefully crafted. The time and effort they had spent to look like some of their favourite characters was clearly on display. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, the event really helped raise the profile of reading across the school.

Amongst the many characters from Harry Potter, and multiple characters from ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ across the year groups, we also had the Mario Brothers, Sherlock Holmes, Alice in Wonderland, Alvin the Chipmunk, The Invisible Man, amongst many others.

Staff also enjoyed dressing up as much as the learners. Alongside the help of a scarecrow from the Science Department, the English Department stole the show - their costumes were fantastic including some elaborate props!

Our winners were as follows:

Year 7 - Murtaza, Ananya, Anaya P, Deepshika.

Year 8 - Zumayya and Leah.

Year 9 - Abel

Oral Health Survey

Harrow Council Oral Health team would like your help.

They are currently undertaking an evaluation to better understand the impact of the oral health promotion service in Harrow has had.  The outcome of their work will culminate in a report with key findings and recommendations to take forward and help shape the oral health programme for 2023-24.

They would be really grateful if you could complete the survey using the link below. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes. All responses will be thematically analysed and responses are kept anonymous.

An Inspector Calls

Harrow High were delighted to welcome back Box Clever Theatre Company this time with their adaptation of J. B. Priestly's An Inspector Calls .

Year 9 spent the afternoon getting fully involved with this interactive piece. Learners were selected to perform as part of the investigation into the death of a young woman. Just who or what was responsible for her death, was what they had to work out. But did the woman exist at all?

This trial of the values of family, society, and class in a changing world  still as much relevance today as it did when it was written 70 years ago.

With huge thanks to Harrow Arts Council, Mr. Khalish-Smith and all the staff who supported the event.

Sparx Maths Champions

Sparx Maths is the foundation of Harrow High’s innovative mathematics homework strategy, which sets bespoke, challenging, but most importantly achievable homework. Hence, learners experience weekly success in building confidence and motivation. Research by Cambridge University found that time spent actively working in Sparx Maths is positively and significantly associated with high outcomes in maths. Learners with the most XPs each half term are rewarded with an Amazon voucher and a certificate of achievement.

Academic Term Dates 2023-24

As you will perhaps be aware, schools are required to open to learners for 190 days each academic year. In addition to the 190 days, we are allocated five additional days for staff Continuing Professional Development in the form of INSET days. Traditionally, we have always allocated two of these INSET days at the start of the academic year and the remaining three spread across the academic year.

After consulting with staff, Harrow High School has decided to disaggregate some of these allocated INSET days and take them together at the end of the Winter Term. This means the school will close for the Christmas break on Friday 15 December 2023 and reopen on Monday 8 January 2024. This does not impact the number of days the school will be open to learners during the year.  This arrangement is for one year on a trial basis and will be reviewed in January 2024.

Therefore, please note for your diary in the next academic year the school will be closed to learners on:

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
