Autumn 2023 Term 1
From the Headteacher
Dear All,
We have come to the end of a very busy and successful half term at Harrow High School. I know we are all looking forward to a week off and then onwards to another half term of excellent learning and progress.
I'd like to take time to share with you all some exciting news. The Department for Education has now published its school performance tables for 2022/23 academic year and Harrow High has achieved a headline progress score of +0.52. That means that at Harrow High, learners make over half a grade more progress across all their subjects than the national average. This puts us into the 'Well Above Average' category and into the top tier of all schools. This is a great achievement and reflects so well upon all the hard work of staff and learners at Harrow High across the last few years.
We have also had our visit from OFSTED in September which was a very positive experience. Thank you to all staff, learners and parents who completed the surveys and shared your excellent experiences of our school. I can't comment on the final outcome as it is still under embargo but I will share the result and report with you as soon as we are able.
More recently, we've been celebrating Black History Month this week - more on that important event later in the newsletter. Many thanks to those of you who attended our ever popular careers fair on Wednesday this week - we had over 300 families in attendance. Thank you to the team who organised this and the excellent Year 11 Achievement Evening on Thursday where over 130 Year 11 families attended.
There are lots more exciting events coming up after half-term including our Year 7 Welcome Evening and Honours Evening (invitation only). Please keep your eyes open for these and I look forward to seeing some of you there.
Have a great half-term. School returns at 9:30am on Monday 30 October 2023.

Libraries Week Read-a-Thon
2 October - 6 October marked National Libraries Week: a week dedicated to celebrating the role and impact libraries have on the wider community.
Harrow High School celebrated this week with a series of events, kicking off with the first ever Read-a-Thon. Lasting the entire week, students were challenged to spend as much time reading in the library as possible with a Waterstone book voucher at stake for the winner of each year group.
A curve-ball was thrown half-way through the competition when Ms. Rajeev and Mr. Power joined in, promising to donate their reading minutes to some deserving students. After five days of solid reading, we came out with our five winners who all together spent an astounding almost 17 hours reading in the library!
Please join me in congratulating the winners:
Elizabeth S (Year 7),
Anika (Year 8),
Jemimah (Year 9),
Prachi (Year 10) and
Shrey (Year 11).
A big thank you to all the students who participated for a whopping total of 1 day, 14 hours and 31 minutes spent reading!

NFL Community Day
On Friday 29 September, 20 Year 7 students were invited to take part in an NFL Community Day at Harrow School. The community day was organised to coincide with the Atlanta Falcons training at Harrow School in advance of their fixture at Wembley Stadium.
The students took part in a series of American Football drills, assisted by players and coaches from the Wembley Stallions American Football team. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to experience an exciting new sport.

UK Mathematics Trust Senior Maths Challenge
On 3 October some of our Year 12 and 13 students participated in the UK Mathematics Trust Senior Maths Challenge. The problems on the Senior Maths Challenge are designed to test learners' problem solving skills, and make them think "outside the box".
Well done to all sixteen learners who participated. Everyone worked hard and submitted some excellent answers. A special congratulations to Abdinasir, Shaik and Roberto who achieved joint Best in Year 12, and Sammy who achieved Best in Year 13 as well as Best in School!

Harrow High Careers Fair 2023
Harrow High School hosted its 5th Careers Fair on 18 October and it proved to be a resounding success with our learners, parents/careers and exhibitors. A range of different organisations attended the fair, which enabled our learners to discover the different careers they could pursue.
A large number of employers, colleges and universities spoke to learners about their organisations, their careers and the opportunities that will be available to them in the future. Our learners were well prepared for the event having completed activities during tutor time before the fair and prepared questions to ask. They had a careers lesson using Unifrog, and were encouraged to research the different organisations online, before attending the Fair.
The school hall was buzzing with excitement and the feedback from staff, learners, parents and carers stating that they found the evening engaging and informative. One parent said, "This is good event! We got so much information, we have so much to think about."
An exhibitor was equally positive saying, "It’s so good to have learners and their parents attend the event together, the conversations that are had are so much more meaningful."

Co-Curricular Clubs
Our co-curricular clubs got off to a wonderful start this half-term with the cooking club, karate, board games club, football and gym being very popular. Our co-curricular programme is designed to provide a wide range of experiences that enrich character, community involvement and social development and it has been great to see so many learners involved!
If your child still wishes to sign up for a club they can do so via Google Classroom.

Black History Month
At Harrow High School we celebrate Black History Month every October. This year’s theme was “Saluting our Sisters” and we began with Ms Barrett speaking in assembly about some of the achievements of black female leaders and activists.
Excellent learning is at the forefront of all that we do and with that in mind, subject teachers have delivered special lessons/activities focused on acknowledging and celebrating the experiences and stories of women of the Black community and the huge impact they have had on all of our lives.
As always, displays that celebrate our community’s diversity have been put up throughout the school, including a permanent one, special music played on the corridors and a celebratory meal was prepared by our wonderful canteen staff on Wednesday.
In a well attended talk to celebrate Black History Month Shai Forde from the City Year team gave learners a historical tour of Barbados and its history of slavery, its links with Britain, Africa and the famous pioneers who fought to bring about emancipation and then independence. We heard about key Barbadian or "Bajan" personalities including Rhianna, the Prime Minister and President, learnt about flora and fauna and the tourism landmarks and the sport which inspired most questions from the eager audience: road tennis. Afterwards there was a taste of the island with snacks and drinks which elicited a very favourable reaction from attendees.
Thank you to our librarian, Ms Zvobgo for her invaluable technical and logistic support. Well done and thank you, Shai, for bringing Barbadian history and culture to Harrow High School so successfully. We hope everyone enjoyed the celebrations!"
