We are working with a lot of nonfiction texts in the beginning of the year! Students will be doing a lot of practice annotating their texts and taking notes.
Skills we are starting with!
Annotation
Summarizing
Deconstructing Paragraphs to identify Paragraph Structures
Main Idea and Key Details
Citing Evidence in the Text
Elaborating on their Citations
Developing Topic Sentences (Single and Double Point)
We are continuing our study with nonfiction texts. We are working on summarizing, main idea, annotation, comparing/contrasting. We will be jumping into fiction texts next week to continue to deepen our understanding of the Nez Perce cultures. By the end of this month we will be getting into the novel Thunder Rolling in the Mountains by Scott O'Dell and Elizabeth Hall.
Once we start looking at some of the fiction texts we will begin to apply similar skills that we have learned with our fiction texts as well as some new skills. Summarizing fiction and sequencing the text. Other new skills we will dive into include theme and using details in our writing.
