April


Have your child draw an April calendar.  Mark off each day together.

Help your child decorate eggs. Place in center of dining table on colorful Easter grass.

Have your child make a table favor for each setting. Fill colorful muffin papers with jellybeans. Bend and attach pipe cleaners for handles.

Make hot cross buns with your child. Bake dinner rolls./ Use vanilla frosting to make cross on top. Sprinkle with nuts and/or raisins.

Help your child make Easter cards from colored paper,markers and cotton balls.

Have your child write a spring poem.

Go to the library. Check out books about springtime, gardens and insects.

Place an open jar outside. After some showers, help your child measure the rainfall.

Take a nature walk with your child. Collect and press wildflowers
.
Have your child locate spring ads in the newspaper(garden equipment,clothes,toys).

Buy a pack of seeds.
1.Help your child  place potting soil in a zip-lock baggie.
2.  Place 5 seeds in soil.
3.  Close.
4. Place in window.

5.  Transplant when sprouts are formed.

Buy or grow basic vegetables.  Let your child help cut vegetables and cook in stock for vegetable soup.

Help your child make a window garden.
1.  Staple 6 colorful paper cups together.
2.Add soil,one flower seed.
3.  Water.
4.  Place in window!

Read several spring poems to your child.

Play a flower name game with your child.  Say: I'm thinking of a flower that begins with an R(rose).  Give other clues until correct guess.

Give your child one yard or houseplant duty. Ex: Water flowers,pull small weeds, etc.

Ask your child to finish this oral story:  Once upon a time a little  boy/girl planted a flower and it began to grow and grow until...

Have your child tell you the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk."

Let your child make indoor plant markers.
1. Cut small paper flowers.
2.  Write plant names.
3.Paste on straw or popsicle stick.
4.  Place in plants.

Let your child make a green snack: olives,veggies,green cream cheese, green drinks
.
  Have your child name green things in the house.

Explain the meaning of "green thumb" to your child.

Help your child look up insects in the dictionary,encyclopedia,or on the internet.

Let your child collect an insect to observe. Place in glass jar with leaves and drops of water. Cover with perforated lid.

Collect a small branch with a caterpillar on it . Place branch in water. Help your child observe and wait for the butterfly.

Help your child make a flower potato stencil.
1.  Cut potato in half.
2. Cut flower design on inside.
3. Place design in paint or food coloring.
4. Press on napkins!

Have your child write a story about a bumblebee.

Serve honey with a meal. Ask your child to explain how bees collect honey.

Hold a family "spelling bee."
1.  Write words on slips of paper.
2. Divide into teams.
3.  Draw word from bowl.
