Speech and Language Development

Parents play a key role in the development of their child's speech and language development. For our young learners, they will learn and demonstrate their skills in play. So, that's where I like to meet them. Playing with your child is a great way to teach new words, new concepts, build sequences/play scenarios, practice sounds and learn many social skills! Start with a toy that is highly motivating for your child and talk out your actions and what you see. Let them hear your good language and speech sounds...they may not always repeat it right away, but trust me they are listening and learning. Occasionally, "sabotage" the activity and wait for them to ask for help/react...you are teaching them cause and effect. If your child is not yet talking, keep your words simple and animated, make a lot of sounds. If your child is a new talker, repeat new words often in play and listen for them to repeat/label. If your child is ready to build on words, add colors or action words (blue car, go car, up Bluey, etc.). If your child is ready to expand his/her language, ask questions/use fill in the blanks. Play should be fun and full of affect! Be a good "Speech Role Model" for them.

Remember, if you have questions, reach out to me or your child's teacher :) We are here to help your child become the best they can be!
