HOMEWORK
Homework teaches students to work independently and develop self-discipline. Homework encourages students to take initiative and responsibility for completing a task. Homework allows parents to have an active role in their child's education and helps them to evaluate their child's progress.
4 nights a week students are required to read for homework. Minimally 2 nights in a 6 day cycle, students will be assigned mathematics homework.
Harrison Homework Hiatus will be an initiative for the 2018-2019 school year. The last Wednesday of every month will be designated at Harrison Homework Hiatus in which no homework is to be given district wide. Additionally, no tests will be given on that following Thursday.
Student Planner
Every child is required to bring his/her Student Planner to and from school every day. They were given one the first week of school. The children copy their assignments from the whiteboard into their Student Planner everyday. Please check your child’s Student Planner to see the daily homework or reminders. When their homework is completed neatly and to the best of their ability, please sign the Student Planner. It needs to be signed every night and comments are optional.
It is important that students have a consistent time for completing their homework. They should do it in an area that is free from distractions and quiet. If your child does not understand an assignment, please feel free to call me, email, or write in the notes portion of the Student Planner. Students should be responsible for organizing their things. They need to bring their homework into school each day in their Take Home folder (no crumpled papers are accepted).
Remember the Student Planner goes home every night and is to be signed by parents/guardian when homework is completed. Please use the Student Planner to inform me of any difficulties or concerns.
Our goal as fourth grade teachers is to promote student responsibility and independence. Therefore, as the year progresses, so do our expectations for the students. The following is our policy for accepting homework:
*Messy or unacceptable work will be redone on the students’ own time.
*Absent students are responsible for obtaining and turning in their missing work when they return to school. The number of days a student was absent is how many days they have to make up their missed assignments unless otherwise discussed.
**Homework is only sent home if it is a concept that has been taught in class! Homework will never be something new to your child! It is meant to reinforce concepts from class and give practice on mastering skills. If a student is truly frustrated, please stop them and have them write 3 good questions about their homework. I will read their questions and work with them to solve the problem the following school day. In fourth grade, homework completion is considered part of daily preparedness. It is part of the materials your child needs everyday. It is imperative that your son or daughter turns in their homework on time. Homework is part of your child’s overall grade. All homework should be turned in the next day, unless specifically stated otherwise. Scores will be lowered for consistently late, missing, or unacceptable work. If a student does not have homework turned in at the beginning of the day, the assignment is marked late. He/she will have 1 night to complete the assignment for 1/2 credit. If it is not returned the next day, it will be marked incomplete.
