The goal of our class Independent Reading Program is to foster your child's love of reading, all while strengthening their developing literacy skills. I am confident that you and your child will embrace a feeling of pride with each book read. Please know how valuable the time and support you invest in this program are to your child’s reading success now, and for years to come.

1. FIND A READING COACH
This could be a parent, grandparent, family member, nanny or babysitter, or even an older brother or sister.
2. FIND SOMETHING TO READ 📚
Any reading material will do (book, magazine, comic book- any genre, fiction or non-fiction).
3. READ 4-5 NIGHTS A WEEK FOR 20 MINUTES...OR LONGER! ⏰
This could be a whole book, a chapter, or an article. The amount read will depend on the type of material they are reading,
4. COMPLETE THE READING LOG
Have your child record information in their monthly reading log. The log can be kept in your child's Take Home Folder.

Make sure it is a "just right" reading selection for your child! 🤚
If you find the selected reading material is too hard, or even too easy for your child, this may not be a "just right" book! Click here to find out more about determining whether your child's reading selection is "just right" for them!
Modeling Fluent Reading
Model good reading by reading aloud while the child listens and watches. This will allow your child to preview the text so they are familiar with it when it is their turn. Also, it allows your child to see and hear what a successful, fluent reader looks like. This is important as this is their goal, to be a successful fluent reader!
Conquer "Tricky Words" 🤔
If your child gets stuck trying to read, or decode, a word:
Try to tap out the word.
Identify the base word and any prefixes or suffixes.
Read the word for your child- it's okay to tell them if it's really tricky! Once you tell your child the word, have them read it in the sentence.
Try Again Another Day 👍
If the selected reading material is proving tricky, encourage your child to choose something else to read or try the selection another time!
