At Harrison High School, I am involved in the Science Research program which gives students the opportunity to explore real-world scientific questions through independent study. Science Research is a three-year elective where students design projects, conduct experiments, and work with mentors in professional fields, gaining hands-on experience in the research process.
What is my project about?
Self-determination theory suggests people are more motivated when they feel autonomous, supported, and connected. Athlete burnout occurs when athletes feel mentally and physically drained, often leading to dropout. Coaching style can play a key role: autonomy-supportive coaching gives athletes freedom in decision-making, while authoritarian coaching is more rigid and fear-based. This study will examine how coaching style relates to burnout and dropout among male and female high school athletes. Athletes will complete surveys on their coach’s style and their own stress levels. It is expected that autonomy-supportive coaching will be linked to lower burnout and dropout by fostering motivation, enjoyment, and empowerment. These results may guide coaches in keeping athletes engaged and could be expanded through future long-term studies.
