FADE IN:
INT. ELEVATOR- NIGHT
Elevator doors open and in walks JUDITH(45), an uptight lady in her mid-40’s. She’s just getting home from a long day at work hoping to be on time to watch the ball drop with her two kids and husband.
Her navy blue blazer and pin straight skirt never seem to wrinkle. Judith checks her watch impatiently as the doors begin to slowly close.
Loud footsteps echo right outside the elevator before BRODHI(25), slips into the closing doors. He’s wearing brightly colored pants that would fly off with a gust of wind and a faded band tee shirt. His hair seems to be longer than Judith’s. He’s obviously stoned out of his mind.
BRODHI
(chill)
Yo.
Judith turns to Brodhi with a look of disgust and regret. Her nose flares as the smell of weed reaches her.
JUDITH
Good evening.
There's awkward silence as the elevator begins to move up. Brodhi's eyes fixate on something random in front of him while Judith looks everywhere but Brodhi.
She checks her watch again, the time has barely changed. 11:46pm. A loud click and then a BANG shakes the elevator. Brodhi doesn’t seem to be affected but the guarded Judith grabs onto the railing next to her.
BRODHI
Woah… Dude.
JUDITH
(panicked)
What was that?
BRODHI
This things got a weird rhythm. You feel that?
JUDITH
(still panicking)
Don’t just stand there, press the alarm button!
BRODHI
Chillax broski. I’ll press the button.
Judith finally stands straight again while Brodhi leans forward. With each shift of weight, there's a loud CREAK and a sway of the elevator.
Brodhi presses the button once. Nothing. He presses it twice. Nothing. He presses it a third time. Nothing. A forth time-
JUDITH
(agitated)
It’s not working.
BRODHI
Huh? Oh… Yeah I just like the noise it makes.
Brodhi presses the button again and a short smile spreads across his face. Judith groans and rolls her eyes.
JUDITH
Do you have a cell phone we could use?
BRODHI
Oh yeah. Good thinking starchild.
JUDITH
My name is Judith. Not ‘starchild’
BRODHI
Well nice to meet you, Judy. My name's Brodhi. Rhymes with Broski.
JUDITH
(impatiently)
Just find your cell phone.
BRODHI
Oh, right.
Brodhi feels around in his pockets for his cell phone. He pulls out some spare cash and places it back in his pocket. Then he pulls out weed and stares at it for a second.
BRODHI
I’ll come back for you later.
Judith sighs and looks around the elevator. He returns to searching and finally pulls out a flip phone.
BRODHI
Alright. Here’s little flappy as I like to call her.
JUDITH
Whatever.
Judith grabs the phone from his hands and flips it open. She begins to slowly type in a number.
BRODHI
You need help with that, Judy? This technology might be above your level.
Judith pauses typing in the number and scoffs.
JUDITH
I’m not that old.
BRODHI
Whatever you say, dude.
Judith finishes typing in the number and holds the phone up to her ear. Her lips are pierced as it rings and Brodhi watches.
The call drops after a few seconds and Judith just looks at the screen.
JUDITH
There’s no service in here.
BRODHI
This is like a pause button… on life.
JUDITH
We’re stuck here.
BRODHI
We’re not stuck, we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be.
Judith rolls her eyes once again. She checks her watch during another awkward silence.
BRODHI
Time is just a social construct y’know. It’s not real.
JUDITH
What?
Brodhi points to Judith’s watch and she burrows her eye brows.
BRODHI
It’s all an illusion early humans made up using the sun and moon and stuff. It’s not real, dude.
JUDITH
You’re joking, right.
BRODHI
I’m dead serious, dude.
JUDITH
(angrily)
Stop calling me ‘dude’!
The elevator creaks and begins to sway once again and Judith reaches for the handle.
BRODHI
Woah… it’s like I’m back in Santa Monica. Surfing through the waves like a bird flying in the wind.
Brodhi puts his arms up to mimic his surfing and follows the sway of the elevator. He moves side to side and ducks like water is flying over his head.
JUDITH
Stop doing that! You’ll only make it worse.
Brodhi laughs as he returns to his normal standing position. Judith slowly steps closer to the buttons and presses random ones.
BRODHI
Yeah, that's a great sound.
JUDITH
We have to figure out a way out of here.
BRODHI
Those doors will open when it’s time, Judy. Everything happens for a reason.
Judith stops pressing buttons and turns to him.
JUDITH
I have a family waiting at home to celebrate with me.
BRODHI
And I got a girl sleeping alone right now. We both got people worth fighting for.
JUDITH
Has your person threatened divorce twice in the past week?
BRODHI
Nah… We’re not married yet. But I sympathize with you young starchild.
JUDITH
I thought I told you to stop calling me that.
A loud clang comes from below the elevator. Judith turns to Brodhi who remains chill.
SECURITY GUARD
Hello? Is anyone in there?
BRODHI
(whispering)
Shhh. It could be a trap.
Judith rolls her eyes and bends down slightly to hear better.
JUDITH
(loudly)
We’re here!
BRODHI
Woah dude, you’re gonna to blow our cover!
Judith shoots a mean stare towards Brodhi as he starts to surf the swaying again.
SECURITY GUARD
We’re going to get you out of there. Just give us 10 minutes!
Judith looks at her watch. 11:51pm. Her eyes relax in disappointment but then looks at Brodhi.
JUDITH
Fine. But… Can you please get my family?
