Pack 82 is open to five to eleven year old boys and girls. The Pack's primary programming schedule follows the local public school schedule with the Pack normally meeting throughout the school year on every Monday evening at Harrison United Methodist Church. New Cub Scouts can join at any point during the year.
Cub Scouts are grouped by age, which frequently but not always, corresponds to their elementary school grade level. Each group is called a Den. The Dens are:
Ages: 5-6
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Ages: 6-7
Grade Level: First Grade
Ages: 7-8
Grade Level: Second Grade
Ages: 8-9
Grade Level: Third Grade
Ages: 9-10
Grade Level: Fourth Grade
Ages: 10-11
Grade Level: Fifth Grade
Pack 82's program year starts in August. Den meetings occur on a weekly basis throughout the school year, with brief breaks during Christmas and traditional holidays. About once a month, all of the dens meet together for a Pack meeting where the Cub Scouts are recognized for their accomplishments. When summer comes, our goal is to continue weekly meetings, but modify them to accommodate a single, large group. Summer programming offers a combination of Pack level and council activities in which the Cub Scouts may participate. While each program year varies, a typical year with Pack 82 may include:
3 - 4 camping opportunities
2 - 5 day hiking trips
1 - 3 day trips
multiple community service opportunities
at least one fishing experience
the famous Pinewood Derby Race
A rain gutter regatta
Cub Mobile race
An extended camping opportunity during the summer is usually offered at Skymont Scout Reservation.
From the ground up, the general organizational structure of adult leadership is: Den --> Pack --> Committee --> Charter Organization --> District --> Council --> national, Boy Scouts of America. The individuals with whom you and your child will have the most interaction with throughout their Scouting career are non-paid volunteers. At Pack 82, the leaders of the Dens, Pack, Committee, and Charter Organization are comprised entirely of non-paid, adult volunteers. These dedicated volunteers enable our Pack to accomplish the mission of Scouting: to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
In Cub Scouts, unlike Scouts BSA and Venturing, the primary leadership role resides with the adults. Cub Scouts generally do not hold traditional leadership roles although they are frequently tasked with various responsibilities. More responsibilities and freedoms are given to the Cub Scouts in the Webelos and Arrow of Light Dens as they prepare for the learning style utilized in Scouts BSA: the patrol method.
All adult leaders, both volunteers and paid professionals, must consent to a background check and complete both the Boy Scouts of America's Youth Protection Training (YPT) and Hazardous Weather Training. The leaders remain subject to ongoing background checks and both trainings are required to be retaken every two years. All parents, regardless of whether they are registered leaders, are strongly encouraged to complete the free YPT program.
Adult leaders are encouraged to and are offered the opportunity to take numerous advanced training courses. Some courses are required if a unit is to participate in certain activities, such as camping, while others prepare the leaders to better fulfill their volunteer roles.
