Microcontrollers - Micro-what?

Development Boards, Dev Boards or Breakout boards, are often called Microcontrollers, but technically, the microcontroller is actually the main processor (chip) found on the board.

ATMega 328P Micro-controllers

There are different brands and types of microcontroller development boards. In camp, we focused exclusively on the ARDUINO® Uno (and Arduino Uno clones).

Arduino offers several boards, of differing capacity and size, to accommodate a host of different maker, hobby and inventor needs. (small enough for making "smart" clothing, or mini-drones, and larger, more powerful boards for bigger projects such as remote control bots and home automation/security)

(NOTE: Arduino has made their boards & software Open Source, meaning others are allowed and encouraged to make (and sell) their own, so there are many excellent "clones" of the Arduino boards available as well, often for less money)

Shopping for Electronics and Robotics components:

Local Stores:

These local stores may not stock many microcontrollers/development boards, but they carry many electronics tools and supplies that can be used with the Arduino or other boards. The staff at these local stores are often very helpful and willing to help.

http://www.danscraftsandthings.com/ Dan's Crafts & Things is on Empire Blvd. near I-590, and it truly is an awesome place to go. Everything craft, hobby and maker can be found there.
http://www.goldcrestelectronics.com/ Goldcrest is in the Swillburg part of the city (near the South Wedge), where South Goodman, South Clinton and Henrietta Street converge, near the Highland Park Diner. They've been around forever and have a good supply of electronics tools and components.

Online Stores:

https://www.amazon.com/ Amazon and https://www.ebay.com/ E-Bay are also good resources for reasonably priced components for DIY electronics projects.
