"Debate is a combat where your weapons are words"
The École de Guerre debate program seeks to help its participants strengthen their command of the English language and their ability to operate alongside their English-speaking counterparts and colleagues.
The program seeks to give its participants the following tangible abilities:
Delivering effective public speeches, both prepared and impromptu, for the motives of argumentation, persuasion, and conviction
Recognizing and practicing models of argumentation and rhetorical persuasion
Developing research & teamwork practices which emphasize evidence-based argumentation and comparative analysis
Understanding how debate reflects and shapes Anglo-American decision-making and leadership
ÉdG's debate program seeks to improve the interoperability of participating officers with their Anglophone counterparts by honing their command of the English language, deepening their understanding of intercultural communication, and fostering skills such as leadership, decision-making, and adaptability.
By the end of the year, you will be able to:
Deliver effective and persuasive public speeches in a variety of professional settings
Construct and refute arguments using argumentative models and persuasive rhetoric
Implement effective research techniques in order to strengthen your argument
Identify and avoid common logical fallacies and pitfalls
Understand Anglo-Saxon habits of communication and persuasion, increasing your interoperability with American and British officers
Greetings, my name is Emilie. I am a British educator who has worked in military higher education for over a decade with the French armed forces. I have extensive experience with the science of adult learning and the language curriculum of transformative pedagogy. In 2010, I built the English department at École de Guerre and designed the English courses. My work as an educator and a director emphasize two central tenets: autonomous learning and cultural competence. The latter one manifests in the diverse debate events and study trips that I organize every year with our Anglo-Saxon networks that range from universities, think tanks and, international organizations to private companies and government institutions.
As a Director, I am committed to the fulfillment of your learning expectations and the honing of your leadership capabilities. I work closely with the debate coach to design the curriculum of the program. I will preside all the debates during the year and will be available for individual coaching sessions for those interested in honing a specific skill related to language proficiency or leadership.
Hello! My name is Colin. I spent four years on the American debate circuit and competed in the NSDA national tournament twice, and have since obtained a BA in International & Comparative Politics and an MA in Diplomacy & International Law from the American University of Paris.
As your debate coach, I am committed to helping you master your skills of research, persuasion, argumentation, and public speaking, with the end goal of providing you with a comprehensive understanding of how to engage in intercultural communication and a stronger knowledge of Anglo-American mindsets and culture.
I will work to support you at all times and in all areas to the fullest of my ability in order to help you achieve your goals. However, debate, by its nature, is an area where one learns by doing, and you will be one of the most important agents in your learning process. I look forward to getting to know you and to seeing your enthusiasm, organization, and commitment!
