CJ 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice
This course provides an introduction to the American system of criminal justice. The crime problem, the police, the judicial system, and correctional facilities and theories of corrections will be examined. Both the legal and behavioral aspects of each stage of the criminal justice process are discussed and analyzed.
CJ 185 Police & Police Practices
This course will explore various issues in policing and police practices are investigated from an experiential and analytical perspective, using assigned readings, class discussions, mock practice exercises and guest speakers. Issues may include: Police history, steps to becoming a police officer, ethical issues facing police, police operations and critical issues facing the police
in the 21st century.
CJ 195 Domestic Violence & Justice
The main objective of the course is to introduce students to the subject of family violence, especially as it relates to the legal system in the United States. Topics includes the historical roots of domestic violence, social scientific theoretical perspectives, the roles and the players, the typical prohibitions, the experience of victims who seek help from authorities and efforts at developing prevention and intervention strategies.
CJ 200 American Courts
This course provides an introduction to the American trial and appellate courts, and an analysis of judicial decision-making. Basic legal concepts effecting the process of a trial will be explored. The roles of the judge, jury, parties, public attorneys and private attorneys will be defined and discussed.
CJ 205 Organized Crime
This course will address the branch of criminality commonly known as “organized crime.” The focus is on a more precise understanding of the term itself, the hierarchy and structure of criminal enterprises, historical underpinnings of organized crime, federal and state prosecution strategies and laws relating to organized crime; and what crimes are related to organized crime, past and present.
CJ 210 Policing & Community Relations
This course focuses on the challenges presented by policing in modern communities. Focusing on the practical side of policing, topics include the impact of selection, training, and professional socialization on community law enforcement, as well as the effects of discretion, racial diversity, and urban crime.
CJ 215 Juvenile Delinquency & Justice
This course provides an overview of the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency and the system designed to handle this form of social deviance. Topics to be covered include discussions of theoretical explanations of delinquency, the evolution of the concept of juvenile justice and the system's response to the problems of child abuse, status offender, delinquent youth gangs and trends in juvenile crime.
CJ 230 Punishment & Corrections
This course will provide a general overview of the American corrections system and a survey of today’s most important correctional problems. Emphasis is placed upon the nature of the prison experience, alternatives to incarceration, judicial intervention in correctional affairs, and the controversy concerning the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs.
CJ 275 Criminal Law & Procedure
This course will provide a general overview of criminal law and procedure. Emphasis is placed upon crimes against the person, crimes against property and criminal procedure from arrest through appeal. The course will also address constitutional issues involved in pre-trial investigation and safeguards provided at trial.
LS 202 Torts
This course combines a general overview of the purposes and procedures of tort law, with examples and exercises on the process and procedures that paralegals employ when working on tort actions. Students will work on a mock case and learn about the different categories of tort litigation.
