Thank you Mr Milner!

After 7 years of working at St Giles Academy, Mr Milner has moved on to a new post in a school closer to his home. As a school community, we would like to thank Mr Milner for everything he has done. He has been on residential trips, school visits, taught in different classes, led clubs, been the minibus driver, guided us through a pandemic, had wet sponges and buckets of water launched at him and so much more! Thursday 30th March was his last day as principal of St Giles Academy and the staff and children came together to give Mr Milner his very own star of the week assembly, where each class shared their own memories and thoughts about Mr Milner and presented him star of the week certificates and his leaving gifts.

We would all like to wish Mr Milner the very best in his future endeavours.

Year group focus - Year 3

Over the last few weeks Year 3 have been working on a project in design & technology. The end product was an Anglo Saxon brooch. The project began with the children learning about what Anglo saxon brooches are and why they were used. They learnt that they were mainly used to secure clothing and demonstrate wealth. Examples of Anglo Saxon brooches were looked at and analysed for colour and detail before the children went on to design their own. Each child designed their brooch and wrote what they would need to make it. The next session, all children followed their designs to make their own brooch using clay and clay tools. A pin badge back was secured onto this to ensure it was fit for purpose. Finally the children painted their brooches in line with their design. Here are some of the end outcomes…

Orienteering

This week, Mr Finn and Mrs Daly took a group of 8 children from Key Stage 2 to Hartsholme Park to complete an orienteering course set up by the School Games.

Despite the unpredictable and at times, bad weather, the children were incredible and relentless in their search for the 8 posts hidden around the park in trees and shrubbery!

The children took real ownership of the map and directed each other brilliantly to complete the course in just under an hour. (We may have given them a quick play on the park as a reward too)

So a huge congratulations to Kristoffers, Travis, Katie, Justin, Lilly, Alfie, Suraya and Skyla-Mai for becoming oreinteering superstars!

 Safeguarding

As a school community we must remember that keeping our children safe is everyone's responsibility. We always appreciate your support and thank you for reporting concerns when you see or hear of incidents outside school.

Online safety

National Online Safety produce online help guides known as #wakeupewednesday to keep children safe online. The first guide is about the importance of secure passwords. According to a Google survey, more than half of us (52%, to be exact) routinely re-use the same passwords, with around one in ten employing a single password across all of their online accounts. What that means, of course, is that any hacker successfully cracking our password would find themselves with access to not simply one of our online accounts, but several (at least).

That, along with the fact that many people’s favoured passwords aren’t exactly impenetrable, makes it easier to see why some sources put the number of online accounts being broken into at around 100 per second. Yes, you read that right: 100 per second. To help give you some extra peace of mind about your digital data, our #WakeUpWednesday guide has some tips on setting more secure passwords.

In the guide you'll find a number of top tips on setting stronger passwords such as how to get creative, what to avoid, and the value of multi-factor authentication.

The second guide is about managing device stress and anxiety. We can access new music and movies in seconds. We can get products delivered to our door the very next day. We can chat or play games with people on the other side of the planet. For all of the remarkable benefits the digital age has brought us, however, it’s also presented us with a whole new raft of pressures and anxieties that, in truth, we’re all still learning to cope with.

From continual notifications inflaming a fear of missing out to the risk of public embarrassment or slanging matches on social media, today’s children and young people have stresses to manage that previous generations simply never encountered. Our #WakeUpWednesday guide examines these uniquely modern worries, highlighting ways to reduce the anxiety that digital devices can bring.

In the guide you'll find tips on reducing push notifications from apps, avoiding social media arguments and spotting when a child’s been upset by something online.
