Message from the Principal:
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this week’s newsletter. I must start with a huge thank you for the effort which has gone into making the children look as fantastic as they do today! We have had a wonderful assembly to celebrate World Book Day and the children looked amazing! They have been so excited about exploring their books today and have produced some wonderful work across the school.
As always, we have been busy in each year group after returning from half term, with football tournaments, visits from the Fire Safety Team, visits from Mighty Mariner and some very messy science experiments to name a few! I would also like to say a huge well done to year six who have completed their final set of practice SATs; I am very proud of them all and the effort they are putting in.
Can I please remind everyone that the rule we have for mobile phones is that if it is absolutely necessary for children to have them on their journey to/from school, ie older children walking home alone, then they need to be handed in and collected from the front office. At the moment we are having huge volumes handed in, some by children walking with parents. Please leave phones at home when children come to school unless they are needed for safety purposes. Thank you for your support with this.
Just a reminder that next week is parents’ evening in each year group so please sign up on Arbor if you would like an appointment.
Thank you everyone; please enjoy reading through the newsletter and have a lovely weekend.
S Sargent
Principal

A message from the Road Safety Team:
This is a reminder from the Road Safety Team, after reports of dangerous and illegal parking from certain parents at William Barcroft Junior School.
All signage and markings are enforceable outside the school and on Queen Mary Avenue and we have scheduled regular visits from the Civil Enforcement Officers to monitor the area and may issue Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) to parents parked in contravention of the markings. These restrictions are in place for the safety of all children/parents at your school.
Yellow zig zag lines outside schools indicate the length of road where stopping is strictly prohibited during the times shown on the upright sign. In the case of William Barcroft vehicles must not stop on these markings Monday to Friday between the hours of 8-9am and 3-4pm. Any vehicle which is observed to be stopped on the zig zags will receive an instant Penalty Charge Notice. The zig zags lines are there to safeguard children’s lives as they allow a clear view of the road.
Double Yellow Lines: Parking is prohibited on double yellow lines at any time although you may stop to load or unload or drop off a passenger. However, this should only be where the driver feels it is safe to do so and the vehicle should only be stopped for as long as it takes to get the passenger in or out of the vehicle. If parents wish to accompany their child into school we would strongly advise they park in a location that is not subject to any parking restrictions, in order to avoid receiving a Penalty Charge Notice.
Parking a vehicle fully or partially across a dropped kerb is classed as an obstruction and either the police or local council can enforce the contravention.
We thank all parents who comply with current restrictions and would like to take the opportunity to remind all drivers to park legally, safely and with consideration for local residents who live in the area.
The Road Safety team, Rosemary the School Crossing Patrol and William Barcroft Junior School will work closely together to ensure the safety of ALL pupils going to and from school and take the appropriate measures to stop dangerous and illegal parking.
WBJS Newsround from the Pupil Governors
YEAR 3
In English we have been writing about a book called the Tin Forest. He wants a beautiful garden and one day his dream comes true! All of the animals drop seeds to help make the flowers grow in the forest.
In maths we have learned the bus stop method to help us with our division. It's really important that we know our times tables so these can help us work out the answer also.
In science we are learning about plants. Yesterday, we planted some seeds so that we can observe them over time.
Declan , Year 3.
YEAR 4
This week we have started reading a new book called Farther and we think it is fantastic! We have been writing a comparative setting description using our powerful vocabulary.
In maths we have been learning about mixed number and improper fractions. We now know how to convert between the two but we think we might need to keep practising to make perfect!
In science we have been researching vertebrates and invertebrates, then classifying animals into subcategories such as mammal, bird, fish and reptile.
Ava, Year 4.
YEAR 5
We have been reading a new book called Curiosity. From this we have started writing a newspaper reporting on the Mars rover.
In music we have been creating background music to fit a spooky scene.
In PE we are learning how to complete an overhead throw and we've even learned a few tricks to try and stump people out!
In RE we have been researching Sikhism and learning all about how important Guru Nanak's role is to the religion.
Nevaeh-taya, Year 5.
YEAR 6
In history we have been learning about WW2. We have learned about who Hitler was, how he rose to power and about the 'blitzkrieg' which means lightening war in Germany.
In DT we have been working on making auto-animals. We are in the process of researching and planning how to make the particular animal chosen in our DT groups.
In science we have been learning about the circulatory system and today we are making BLOOD SOUP!
Jacob, Year 6.
Barcroft Stars
Every Friday, we celebrate the fantastic work and attitudes of our children during our Star of the Week assembly. Each teacher presents their Star of the Week, Reader of the Week and TTRS of the Week whilst our Learning Mentors award fastasic behaviour and kindess on the playground. We also celebrate our birthdays in style with a whole school sing-song and give out spot prizes for fantastic work and home reading.
If your child is chosen for this assembly, you will receive a message no later than Thursday. If you wish to attend, the assembly times are as follows:
Year 3 and Year 4 - 8.55am
Year 5 and Year 6 - 9.55am
Please can we remind all parents that children are required to read 3 times a week at home and their reading record is expected in school every day. There are a multitude of beneficial reasons why children should read at home: comfort and reassurance, confidence and security, relaxation, happiness and fun. It is essential that we are providing children with the time to explore stories, giving them time and full attention when reading them a story, asking questions to support comprehension and clear routines. Reading at home builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds imagination and even improves their sleeping patterns. Not to mention that it supports all areas of the curriculum and increases progress, development and understanding. We offer a well-stocked library and purple area which provides reading books to take home and children are rewarded when completing 3 home reads.
Thank you for your support with this.

We celebrated World Book Day on Friday 7th March and wow, what a day we had!
Children and staff were invited to dress up as a character from a book that brings them Delight and Joy! There were so many fantastic, creative costumes and 4 well-deserved prize winners, including a staff prize winner too! Throughout the day, we had a 'Picture Book Bonanza!'
Each class was given a mysterious bag by Mrs McGrath, labelled with clues to help us guess and predict which book we had, we opened it and each bag contained a surprise picture book! We then read the book as a class and decided our own activity we'd like to complete! After that, the classes in each year group rotated the books they were given; by the end of the day, we'd read and enjoyed 3 picture books! We added all of our work to our wonderful 'Book of Books' to showcase our learning and enjoyment.
As a reward for their participation in a local football tournament, the girls were given free tickets for the EFL League Two fixture between Grimsby Town and Fleetwood Town on the 22 nd February. They were also given a memorable opportunity to be flag bearers to welcome the two teams out onto the pitch prior to kick-off. Mr Dawes and Mrs Beeson attended the match also to support the girls. The girls were treated to a thrilling game as George McEachran scored a wonder strike to put Grimsby Town ahead in the first half! The visitors got themselves level courtesy of Ryan Grandon’s chip shot over Jordan Wright. Minutes after, Danny Rose scored the winner as he headed Grimsby back in front. We all enjoyed the game and here are some photos that Mrs Beeson had captured - you can tell we had a good time!
10 excited girls from Year 3/4 participated in a football festival on Wednesday 5th March, which was aimed at engaging girls into playing football. The girls ventured to Clee Fields along with 19 other local schools at an event, which hosted over 200 girls! The event had 10 different football drills, which helped the girls improve basic skills in football. These involved drills such as: queen of the hill, shooting drills, relay dribbling races, through the gates passing drills and mini 2v2 games. The girls were also fortunate to be coached by the team of Grimsby Town Ladies.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the event and everyone improved their skills and love for football through the afternoon. This will stand the girls with a chance to possibly join the girls football team that has been so successful with Mr Dawes.
Well done to everyone involved!
On wb: 10th March we will be celebrating British Science Week by completing a range of activities based on changing and adapting. We have chosen to explore climate change and research what we can do to support our planet.
Parents are invited to view the children's work on promoting climate change on Friday 21st March in the hall.
Our Gardening Club have been very keen to get outside and get stuck in to mulching our trees and saplings. They've loved using the new wheelbarrows donated by East Marsh United.
Eco Warriors
The Eco Warriors completed a school field clean up. They collected 5 bags of rubbish, using our litter pickers. The next event will be to take part in a clean up at one of our local parks.
Reading Champions
The reading champions have be helping Mrs McGrath with putting together a vibrant wishlist for our Schloastic book fund. They've also been arranging lots of fun activities for the children to complete on World Book Day along with designing competitions and organising prizes. Whilst completing all of these important jobs, the reading champions have also been supporting in the classrooms after being fully trained in peer reading with Mrs McGrath.
You are all doing an amazing job and we are grateful for your support around school.
In Spring 1, all year groups took part in a local art exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Centre. These were sent off to the team who have carefully curated a display of all their work! Posters created by children at WBJS are on display at the Cafe Gallery at the Fishing Heritage Centre. This is free to access and a lovely celebration of their work with the community.

Starting March 31st, join us every last Monday of the month from 9:00 - 10:00am for an informal chance to have a chat, share any thoughts, or ask for support if you need it. Whether it's just a friendly conversation or you have questions about support services, Mrs Bowden is here to help.
We’d love to see you there – no appointment needed!
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service have recently visited our year 5 students to discuss what to do in a fire emergency. The children were really engaged, reenacted the stop, drop and roll advice and asked some really thought provoking and interesting conversations. All children left the session feeling much more confident in their ability to keep themselves safe in an emergency.

‘Fake news’ is a widespread issue in the digital world, and it's overwhelmingly likely that both children and adults will be exposed to it online In fact, a study from the Alan Turing Institute has found that 94% of people in the UK have encountered misinformation on social media and that’s only the ones who were aware of it!
However, while some fake news is shared mistakenly by well-meaning individuals, it’s also shared by scammers and other cyber-criminals to lend legitimacy to their con. While this presents a clear risk to children and young people online, the question remains as to how we can protect them against such tactics.
