Message from the Principal:
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our first newsletter of the summer term.
The talk of the school since returning from Easter has all been about the arrival of the chicks, who successfully hatched last week and have been out for lots of cuddles since! We’ve also been busy getting into our new summer term topics and I’ve had lots of proud children coming to show me the great work they’ve done already.
Year 6 parents can I just make sure you have received your SATs letter which was sent this week? This sets out all you need to know about the test week and our special breakfast club. I also need you to pop onto ParentPay asap to let us know the size of Leavers’ Hoody that you would like for your child please.
Next week we have the Farr Ings trips for year 3 pupils and the Trashion show on Friday where we will showcase the outfit that our team have made from recycled materials. We have also added onto the newsletter today all of the dates for summer events this term so that you have plenty of notice.
Please enjoy reading what the children have been up to, and have a lovely weekend everyone.
S Sargent
Principal
This year in school, we aim to improve attendance and punctuality as a key priority. Thank you to all parents putting in exceptional effort to get their children into school since coming back from February half term. Our attendance figures are increasing which means that our children are getting the best opportunities possible whilst they are with us.
Week beginning 15/04/2024
Well done to 3C and 6F for getting 97% this week!
Our attendance across school has been affected by short illness absences this week so we hope that we can get everyone back on track with attendance next week!
Reminder - we can administer medication in school which has been prescribed by the GP. We just need you to compelte a permissions form at the office. If you need any more information, please don't hesitate to contact the office.
Week beginning 22/04/2024
Well done to 5HS for getting 98.5% this week!
Our attendance across school this week has improved hugely.
Well done everyone, keep up the good work!
Here's an example of how your child's attendance is calculated:
5 absent days = 97%
10 absent days = 95%
It is important that you try to get your children into school as much as possible so that they receive the best education and school experiences possible. If your child's attendance drops below 97% the school will monitor this and offer support to parents to help improve this.
If you would like to discuss this more, please contact the school office.

If your child arrives at school without the correct footwear they will be provided with a pair of plimsolls to wear for the day. Thank you in advance for your support
Please do not ride bikes and scooters on the school grounds, this is for children and adults. This is for the safety of our children, thank you.
Please note, electric scooters are not allowed on the school site due to health and safety regulations and not having the facilities to store them in school.
Please do not bring pets onto the school site due to health and safety regulations.

Year 3 will have PE Monday and Wednesday
Year 4 will have PE Tuesday and Thursday
Year 5 will have PE Monday and Wednesday

THE CHICKS HAVE ARRIVED!
Excitement was bursting at the seems this week when our chicks arrived and hatched! We have been observing them hatch and making notes on their development whilst they are in our care. Each class have been to visit our new fluffy residents each day and some children were even brave enough to give them a gentle hold!
Lost Property
Thank you to those parents who visited the lost property collection in the hall last week. Lots of items were retrieved, however, there are still plenty more still in school. We will be holding another lost property session again before the end of this term so please keep a look out.
To avoid important items going missing, we recommend that you label your children's clothes clearly on the tag to ensure that they are easier to locate back to their owner when they go missing.
What's happening in each year group this week?
YEAR 3
Since returning after Easter, we have started our new Animals including Humans topic in Science. So far, we have learnt all about the 7 life processes following the MRS GREN acronym, and about human and animal skeletons. We are looking forward to learning even more about the human body in the coming weeks.
Last week in English we completed our picture book study on The Barnabus Project. We all thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and completing a range of activities around the book. Some of our activities included creating our own creature based on two animals of our choice, and recreating and writing our own ending for the story. If you would like to listen to the story again then follow this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7TVpVcMpHQ
This week we have started reading The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo.
In maths we finished our mass and capacity topic and have now moved onto our new fractions’ unit which has allowed us to build on our previous knowledge of fractions from last term. This week we have worked incredibly hard on adding and subtracting fractions, as well as finding unit and non-unit fractions of an amount.
YEAR 4
This week year 4 have been learning all about decimals and how to make a whole. We are finding this a little tricky but with some extra practise, we are finally getting it. In June, year 4 will be completing the national year 4 multiplication check which assesses children’s times tables knowledge. Therefore, we ask if parents can promote and encourage children to practise their times tables at home or complete 10 minutes of TTRS per evening so that they are prepared for this when the time comes.
In English, we have been researching about how the Ancient Greeks changed the world ready to write our non-chronological report in the next few weeks. We have learned so much from these sessions and we are amazed at how much they have influenced the things we do and use today.
We have observed sculptures in art and created our own sketches on them using out art skills. Please take a look at our twitter page to see our exhibition of sketches.
In science, we have been learning about inventors from history and how they have influenced and changed the world we live in. Ask your children all about Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Tim Berners-Lee and The Wright Brothers.
YEAR 5
Last week in English Year 5 studied a picture book called ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy. We enjoyed reading this story and discussed an alternative ending to fairy tales if they didn’t end happily. We also wrote some fantastic character descriptions of a wicked witch and setting descriptions of a forest. This week, we have started our new book, for summer term, called ‘The Lost Whale’ by Hannah Gold. We are very excited to read it and are beginning to look at the features of non-chronological reports, in preparation to write our own report all about Grey Whales.
In Topic, we have started our new learning on river and oceans and how humans impact them. We have learnt about the Water Cycle and how it works and we have learnt the names of the 5 oceans – ask us to sing you the song we learnt! In Science, we are beginning our topic on Living things and have learnt that plants can reproduce sexually and asexually and dissected a flower and labelled all the parts it needs. We also learnt how important insects, such as bees, and the wind are in the process of pollination and fertilisation.
In Maths, we have begun learning measures and shapes. We are learning how to correctly estimate angles and use a protractor to accurately read and measure the degrees of acute and obtuse angles. We have also learnt that a reflex angle is greater than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees.
YEAR 6
Year 6 are incredibly busy preparing for their upcoming SATs tests. We are proud of each and every single one of them as we know that it is tough going at the moment with all the revision we are doing. The children are doing an amazing job so far!
In English, we are currently reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, which follows the story of a young girl and her father on a remote island known as Bear Island. This week we have been gaining a deeper understanding of the plot and the main characters.
In maths, we are looking at coordinates; we are perfecting and practising the skill of plotting coordinates on a quadrant grid and we are also looking at translating shapes.
In our afternoon sessions we are looking at climate change and the effect on our planet. We have specifically looked at how this has impacted the polar bear. We have learned that global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps has dramatically reduced habitats and food sources for polar bears. Scientists also predict that they could become extinct by the year 2100 if global warming continues at its current rate.

Maths
Later on this term, children in year 4 will undertake the national multiplication table check. This is statutory for all children in year 4 nationally.
What is the multiplication tables check?
The purpose of the check is to determine whether your child can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help your child’s school to identify if your child may need additional support.
It is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times table questions. Your child will be able to answer 3 practice questions before taking the actual check. They will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
How are school supporting year 4 children in preparation for their tables check?
Year 4 children have regular access to Times Tables Rockstars in school, teachers will specifically set children focus tables to learn and children will have opportunities to practise these using the online platform. Starters in maths will also have a specific times tables focus. Through the different game modes and data provided through Rockstars teachers carefully plan interventions and identify any gaps children may have. The children sit regular soundchecks and gigs in school which are very similar to the format of the actual Multiplication Tables Check that they will take in June. Mr Ferrier also runs a Times Tables Rockstars club every Tuesday and Friday lunch time for all children to access.
Science
During our science assembly this week we have learnt about NASA’s progress in the exploration of the moon. We reflected on the Apollo missions and discussed how and why it has been such a long time since any human landed on the moon. We looked at the Artemis missions and watched a video about the astronauts who are going to the moon next. Have a look at these links.
For Parents - What is County Lines?
Internet Matters have put together a really useful guide for parents explaining county lines, how children are targeted, how children may be vulnerable and some resources/support.

Roblox - How to Report
Most users of Roblox will probably know how to report content or other players on Roblox, but it's possible some (including their parents) won't. There is a 1-minute video on YouTube showing users how to report on Roblox here:

BARCROFT DIGITAL LEADERS
Our Digital Leaders have been busy working around school in the classrooms promoting positive relationships online and supporting their teachers with the delivery of online safety/ ICT lessons. They've really taken to their new role incredibly and this term they will be working with Mrs Newell to help produce quality support for parents on our fortnightly newsletter. Please look out for their new section on the next newsletter.
