William Barcroft Junior School
'Success and happiness for all'
Message from the Principal:
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our first newsletter of the new year. It does feel rather late to say this but I’d like to wish everyone a very happy new year!
We’ve already made a busy start with swimming, PE Festivals, Science Lab Rascals and tea parties to name a few.
As you know we are working hard on embedding our new trust DANCE values this year (delight and joy, ambition, nurture, community and empowerment) and have
already focused on ambition and empowering during autumn term. This half term we will be focusing on community, looking at how we can continue to build our school
community and how we can make a positive contribution to our local community. We will update you as the term goes on with what we have been doing.
Can I also take this opportunity to welcome Miss Carrie, our new Learning Mentor to the William Barcroft team, and to welcome back Miss Jervis after her maternity
leave. Whilst talking about maternity can I also share the wonderful news with you that Mrs Burman is expecting her first baby at the end of May!
Congratulations to her from all of the WBJ team.
I have a couple of issues to ask for your support with this week please. The first is about being thoughtful with parking on Barnett Place. I have had further complaints
of parking over driveways and residents unable to get out of their properties. The second issue at the start of this new term is helping us to ensure that children
are in full school uniform and are bringing their correct PE kits into school. We are seeing a number of children bringing different tops for PE when we purchased kit for
the whole school in September. Ensuring children look smart and have the appropriate clothing really helps maintain our high standards for lessons.
Thank you everyone, please enjoy looking at the newsletter and reading what the children have been up to at the start of term, and have a lovely weekend.

Principal
What is Pharmacy First?
The NHS-funded service enables children and adults to get convenient access to advice and treatment where appropriate for seven common conditions, without the potential delay of having to wait for a GP appointment. Accessing the service may mean that children feel better and back to school as quickly as possible, as well as supporting parents/carers to also get better if they are unwell with one of the conditions covered under the service. There is no need to make an appointment; parents or carers can pop into their local Boots pharmacy with their child and ask for help under the service.
The service supports with the following conditions for people in the age groups specified below:
Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
Infected insect bites and stings (aged 1 year and over)
Sore throats (aged 5 years and over)
Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women (aged 16 to 64 years)
Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
The person will see a pharmacist in a private consultation room. The pharmacist will provide advice and, if clinically appropriate, offer to supply treatment for the condition*. If treatment is provided, an electronic message will be sent to the person’s GP surgery so their health record can be updated.
Should the pharmacist be unable to help, they will direct the person to their GP surgery or other healthcare professional, as appropriate.

WBJS Newsround from the Pupil Governors
YEAR 3
In the morning we have been learning short multiplication and reading a new book called the Butterfly Lion. This is about a lion cub who is sent away which upsets the young boy. We have been writing our diaries based around this. In the afternoons in 3L, we have started reading 'We Haven't Seen Anything Yeti?' as our Drop Everything and Read Book. We have been doing continuous line drawing in art where you do not take your pen off the sheet!
Baillie T, Year 3.
YEAR 4
In English we started a new book called The Song of a Dolphin Boy and we drew the map of Stormhead. We labelled where all of the characters lived and used apostrophes in our writing to show possession.
This week year 4 have started swimming. We had to try and swim on our front and back.
On Thursday we did a Science experiment where we put vinegar and baking soda in a bottle and tried to catch the gases in a balloon on the top.
Annabelle T, Year 4.
YEAR 5
In English we have been reading Harry Potter and making our own diary's pretending we are Harry.
In Maths we have been using our multiplying skills to find equivalent fractions.
On Tuesday this week we went to Clee Academy to take part in the PE festival where we practised our tennis skills, football skills and throwing skills.
In Art we used different brushes to create different patterns on our page.
Sofia W, Year 5.
YEAR 6
Our new topic is WW2 and we have been reading Rose Blanche. This is a story about a girl who lived during WW2 and witnessed some very dark things. In Science we have been learning how we see and how light travels. Did you know you actually see the world upside down? Last week, Lab Rascals came to visit school and did some fun workshops with year 6. We built windmills to generate electricity. This then gave power to the car.
Jacob J, Year 6.
Barcroft Stars
Every Friday, we celebrate the fantastic work and attitudes of our children during our Star of the Week assembly. Each teacher presents their Star of the Week, Reader of the Week and TTRS of the Week whilst our Learning Mentors award fastasic behaviour and kindess on the playground. We also celebrate our birthdays in style with a whole school sing-song and give out spot prizes for fantastic work and home reading.
If your child is chosen for this assembly, you will receive a message no later than Thursday. If you wish to attend, the assembly times are as follows:
Year 3 and Year 4 - 8.55am
Year 5 and Year 6 - 9.55am
Please can we remind all parents that children are required to read 3 times a week at home and their reading record is expected in school every day. There are a multitude of beneficial reasons why children should read at home: comfort and reassurance, confidence and security, relaxation, happiness and fun. It is essential that we are providing children with the time to explore stories, giving them time and full attention when reading them a story, asking questions to support comprehension and clear routines. Reading at home builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds imagination and even improves their sleeping patterns. Not to mention that it supports all areas of the curriculum and increases progress, development and understanding. We offer a well-stocked library and purple area which provides reading books to take home and children are rewarded when completing 3 home reads.
Congratulations to 3S, 6F, 6M and 5B who won the reading trophy this week!
Thank you for your support with this.
In November, we hosted a book fair that gave our children the opportunity to expand their personal libraries! Below is the total earned from the book fair - a huge thank you to all!
As a result, we earned a grand total of £76 to spend on new books for our school! Thank you to all parents, carers, family and friends that came to the book fair and bought a book. Mrs McGrath is now working with Reading Champions to create a wishlist for our vouchers!
Year 5 attended a PE Festival at Cleethorpes Academy on Tuesday 14th January and it was amazing! We were taking part with Bursar Academy. Both schools participated in a variety of multisport activities led by Year 9 sport leaders from Cleethorpes Academy. This included a range of sports such as: gymnastics, football, badminton, athletics and handball. Everybody worked extremely hard and displayed excellent behaviour for the sport leaders and the Cleethorpes Academy staff. It was lovely to see the children interact with new people from other schools. It was also great to see some former staff on our visit such as Mrs Otter, Miss Hambling and Mrs Hamad. Cleethorpes Academy were very complimentary of our children and are looking forward to welcoming them back in the summer for more activities.
Year 6 enjoyed a fabulous workshop in which they learnt all about climate change and how important it is to look after our planet.
They found out about renewable energy. In teams, they built a vehicle out of Lego which they then powered with wind.
All the children are on board with the fight against climate change- ask them what our planet will be like in 70 years if we don’t continue to change.
Digital Leaders
This week, our digital leaders joined a national Zoom meeting with 'Digital Leaders 4 Sustainability'. It was hosted by our HLT school Great Coates Acadamy and they shared their fantastic work with micro:bits, crumble kits and their assembly about digital footprints.
We're now looking forward to putting these ideas into practise in the classroom for our fellow peers and look forward to our next meeting!
On our next newsletter you'll hear from our Eco Warriors who are planning their first park clean in the local community.

With the Fortnite game as popular as it ever was, it's important that parents of children who play the game are updated on parental controls which will assist. There are quite a few features within Fortnite which may appear overwhelming so Internet Matters have put together a fantastic web page to guide parents through all the controls/settings.
You can find the web page here:
