Message from the Principal:
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this week’s newsletter.
I have to start with the biggest well done to all of our year six superstars! Every single one of our 80 pupils gave it their all during SATs week and I couldn’t be prouder of them. Thank you also to parents for your help in ensuring children were all at breakfast club promptly too; this was a huge help and really settled the children each morning. It has been lovely to see them enjoying their rewards and down time together today.
Thank you to the parents who have given their views by filling in our consultation. Can I encourage every parent to fill this in; we really do want to know what everyone thinks in order to make our decisions. I will be back on the morning gate now SATs are finished so please feel free to ask if you have any queries around this.

We have again had a busy fortnight in school, enjoying a lovely VE Day celebration in the sunshine last week. Year 5 children have also been working on our dance value of ambition at IntoUniversity, and year 4 have been enjoying their exciting science experiments.
We said a temporary goodbye on Friday to Mrs Burman who is due to give birth to her baby shortly. She will be returning later this year and we wish her all the best for this exciting chapter in her life. Miss Hutson will be teaching alongside Miss Slack in 5B for the remainder of this academic year.
We have added some more useful dates to the bottom of the newsletter for you in preparation for the very busy summer two term.
Details will follow but dates are now set for key events.
Please enjoy reading about what the children have been up to, and have a lovely weekend everyone.
S Sargent
Principal

WBJS Newsround from the Pupil Governors
YEAR 3
In English we have been reading a new book called James and the Giant Peach. We are now on chapter 16 and James is inside the giant peach with his insect friends. However, they are inside whilst the giant peach is rolling around the city!
In maths we have been learning about money and Roman numerals. 1=I, 2 =II, 3=III, 4 =IV and 5=V.
In PE we have been listening to music and created a dance story. We took it in turns to follow each other's dance moves.
I like science and all the experiments we do. We have recently learned about plants and we did an experiment with celery and a flower. We had to observe if the water and food dye travelled through them. The celery turned blue the most.
Baillie, Year 3.
YEAR 4
We have just finished reading The Highland Falcon Thief and we are now drafting a newspaper which reports on the capture of the thief.
This week we have been learning about money and practising our times tables ready for our multiplication tables check in June.
We have looked at our science experiment which was an observation over time and concluded that fresh orange, cordial and vinegar are bad for the enamel on our teeth and water is the best.
We've also talked about what makes a healthy, balanced plate in our PSHCE lesson.
Annabelle, Year 4.
YEAR 5
This week we have been writing a letter to Mrs Sargent to try and persuade her to agree with us.
We are currently reading The Lost Whale where a boy has been whale watching with a friend. We will read more of this next week.
We walked to Into University where we completed a programme about zoology and we made a mask.
In science we have been learning about the human body and how it changes through puberty.
In spelling we have been learning how to spell difference and different.
Sofia, Year 5.
YEAR 6
This week it has been my birthday and we have completed our SATS! We have spent plenty of our time doing revision so that we were ready for the tests alongside some mindfulness activities to keep us happy.
In PE we have been doing athletics were we have been using hurdles on the spring race track.
In music we have been singing along to Mr Blake on his guitar.
On Friday we had a year 6 SATS party to celebrate our success. We completed lots of activities such as football with Mr Ferrier, rounders and games in the classroom. We also had an ice cream van come in the afternoon and we all received a free ice cream.
Jacob, Year 6.
Every Friday, we celebrate the fantastic work and attitudes of our children during our Star of the Week assembly. Each teacher presents their Star of the Week, Reader of the Week and TTRS of the Week whilst our Learning Mentors award fastastic behaviour and kindess on the playground. We also celebrate our birthdays in style with a whole school sing-song and give out spot prizes for fantastic work and home reading.
If your child is chosen for this assembly, you will receive a message no later than Thursday.
Please can we remind all parents that children are required to read 3 times a week at home and their reading record is expected in school every day. There are a multitude of beneficial reasons why children should read at home: comfort and reassurance, confidence and security, relaxation, happiness and fun. It is essential that we are providing children with the time to explore stories, giving them time and full attention when reading them a story, asking questions to support comprehension and clear routines. Reading at home builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds imagination and even improves their sleeping patterns. Not to mention that it supports all areas of the curriculum and increases progress, development and understanding. We offer a well-stocked library and purple area which provides reading books to take home and children are rewarded when completing 3 home reads.
Thank you for your support with this.
Last week, our school celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a fantastic street party right here on the school grounds! Bunting and flags adorned the playground as we enjoyed party treats whilst listening to wartime songs. The children spent part of the afternoon learning why we celebrate VE Day in the present day and asked some fantastic questions. It was a wonderful way to learn about this important moment in history, remembering the end of the Second World War in Europe and the joy it brought, all while having a great time together as a school community.
Year 5 have had a fantastic day at Into University! They have been learning all about what university life is like, learnt all about Zoology and what the subject involves and that at university you study a few subjects in depth. We then learnt how to debate and what a debate was and had a practice at debating - linking to Zoology. Our debate question was Should Grimsby have a Zoo? Children were very respectful and polite listening to each others for and against arguments and lots of them have been inspired and want to aim higher and go to university themselves! .

Wednesday 4th June - Parent drop in coffee morning with Compass Go
During Child Safety Week, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service reminds parents/guardians to take steps to protect their children from burns and fires. With a focus on home safety, here are key tips to keep in mind:
- Keep items that can cause fires, such as candles, matches and lighters out of children's reach. Also, make sure hot items like kettles, irons and hair straighteners are inaccessible.
- Prevent children from playing near fires or heaters to avoid burns.
- Use the back hobs on the stove and make sure saucepan handles are not sticking out to prevent them from being knocked off.
- Never leave children unattended in the kitchen.
- Install childproof guards in front of open fires or heaters; the best ones can be fixed to the wall.
- Keep in mind that certain clothing materials, particularly synthetic fabrics, can ignite quickly when in contact with flames.
- In case of clothing catching fire, remember to 'stop, drop, and roll.' Avoid running around, as it can worsen the flames. Lie down and roll around to smother the flames with a heavy material like a coat or blanket.
- Before adding hot water to a bath or sink, run cold water first and test the temperature. Only put a baby or child into the water once it's been tested.
- Store chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children.
For burn first aid, remember 'cool, call, and cover!'
- Cool the burn with running cold tap water for 20 minutes and remove all clothing and jewellery (unless it is melted or firmly stuck to the wound).
- Call for help - dial 999 in an emergency or 111 or contact your local GP for non-emergency advice.
- Cover the burn with cling film or a sterile, non-fluffy dressing or cloth, ensuring the patient stays warm.

In Summer term 2 we will be working alongside Humberside Police 'Mini Police' project. We have chosen 10 pupils to take part in this fun and interactive engagement programme. The pupils will take part in 7 sessions and parents/carers are invited to an awards presentation at the end.
