Message from the Principal:
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to what feels like a bumper edition of our newsletter!
There has been so much going on in the last fortnight that it is packed with photos and news to share with you. Firstly, I’d like to say a huge well done to all year 6 pupils who attended our residential trip. Despite some tricky weather at times they were fabulous and really threw themselves into all activities. Thank you also to the staff that made this trip possible.
We have also been busy working on our ambition value, with trips in year 5 to Grimsby College to sample practical courses, and year 3 and 4 working with IntoUniversity exploring potential careers.
I’d also like to share some lovely news with you; Mrs Burman has given birth to a beautiful baby boy named Jesse. We would like to offer our congratulations and best wishes to her and her family.
Please look out for emails and letters regarding trips and activities as they are coming thick and fast as we enter our busiest part of the term. As always if you have any queries please ask.
Enjoy looking at what the children have been up to and have a lovely weekend everyone.
S Sargent
Principal
Congratulations to 6F and 3S who were our Summer term 1 attendance challenge winners! They will be celebrating their win with a chosen activity of their choice to enjoy as a class. The children across school enjoy being part of a classroom community and it is lovely to see everyone working together on their class attendance. Our new attendance class challenge has started for Summer term 2 and we will also be celebrating those who have exceptional attendance this year towards the end of term. Well done WBJS team!
If you child is absent, please contact the school office via telephone rather than the enquires email so that we can log your child's absence before the registers close.
Holidays During Term Time
While we understand the temptation of lower prices and family availability, we kindly remind parents and carers that holidays should be taken during the 13 weeks of school holidays available each year. Principals are only permitted to authorise leave during exceptional circumstances, and in line with national policy, unauthorised term-time holidays may result in a fixed penalty notice being issued.

WBJS Newsround from the Pupil Governors
YEAR 3
We have been creating 3D shapes using art straws and marshmellows! We also used polydron to create 3D shapes and then learned their names.
We are still reading James and the Giant Peach but we are finishing this in our DEAR time. Our new book this term is Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx which is about the Brownstone family who always go on adventures. Her Grandfather told her about his adventures but she didn't believe him. However, every time she went to sleep, these stories came to life. Some of these were really scary and she couldn't wait to wake up at sunrise!
In history, we have learned about Tutankhamun's tomb. Inside the rooms there was reportedly 5000 different personal items which belonged to him such as toys, games and Shabtai (which is something which comes alive and helps guide the person to the afterlife).
Ethan, Year 3.
YEAR 4
We have been learning about angles in maths such as a right angle, acute angle and and obtuse angle.
In English we have been planning our non-chronological report about the Romans. We are sharing our knowledge about Boudicca, the Roman army and how it grew. 5000 Romans beat 50,000 Celts because they were so well trained!
On Thursday we have been celebrating Empathy Day in school. We spent the first part of the day creating our empathy glasses which we wore throughout the day. We have read a book about how people all look different and this is ok, and we have also read about evacuees during the world wars. From both of these books we have been asked to empathise and think how they would be feeling in these situations. We have also written our own start to an empathy story as a class about a girl who had a stutter, and we have sent it to a class in year 6 to complete.
Poppy, Year 4.
YEAR 5
This week we have been to Grimsby College to experience their performing arts, sports and computing courses. This was fun but next time I'd like to try the glow-in-the-dark football.
In class, we have been reading The Lost Whale and we have just found out that his mum is in the hospital. She likes to draw whales because when she was younger she befriended a whale. He tells her that he has seen the same whale, 'white beak', whilst in California and this makes her very happy!
We have also been looking at frog and butterfly lifecycles in science. We noticed that both of them have lungs but one lives in a cocoon and the other lives in water during their cycle.
Sofia, Year 5.
YEAR 6
During the last two weeks we have been watching Romeo and Juliet but the modern version. Instead of swords, the Capulets and Montagues use modern day weapons. However, the rest of the story is the same.
We have been researching plants and using classification methods to identify and put them into groups.
In maths we have been revisiting algebra which I find nice and easy! I have spent lots of time on the reasoning and problem solving questions.
This Thursday, we have been participating in Empathy Day where we put ourselves into other peoples shoes. We have made empathy glasses that gives us the "superpower" to empathise with people and see how they are feeling.
We have been looking at WW1 and WW2 in history and recently we have made a slideshow about the key historic events which happened during these periods of time.
Jacob, Year 6.
In school, we celebrate our reading success and the children with a significant reading milestone. We identify those children with 'Reading Certificates' for our rewards:
Bronze award - 150 reads
Silver award - 200 reads
Gold award - 250 reads
Diamond award - 300+ reads
These children are celebrated in the 'Star of the Week' assembly with a personalised certificate and given a corresponding badge to wear with pride!
Lots of our Year 6 children attended our residential trip to Back2Bear. They spent three days in the woods, camping in tents and away from home comforts and technology!
When they arrived, they completed an orienteering competition in teams to help them find their way around the site. Following this, they were straight in the woods learning how to build their own fires in the wild.
After a night in the bell tents, they went on a 5 mile hike and even stopped off at the local pub for some chips on the way back. They then spent the afternoon and the following day completing activities: archery, axe throwing, shelter building, laser tag and gutter ball to name a few!
It was a great 3 days away and the children have made great memories with each other before they leave us to go to their secondary school.
Pupils enjoyed celebrating our very first Empathy Day! The theme was 'Jump into some else's story'.
Pupils designed their own Empathy power super glasses and read class books, discussing what what Empathy is and how we can learn to show Empathy through our actions. Pupils took part in a variety of different activities and also created their own story which they then swapped with another year group, who 'jumped into the story' to complete it.
They have had a great day joining the festival and have developed their Empathy skills.
Year 5 had an excellent day visiting Grimsby college. They chose different activities and learnt different skills throughout the morning as well as potential future choices when they are older.
Sports pupils took part in glow-in-the-dark football and developed team work skills. They could also wear ‘glow-in-the-dark paint to help them see each team. Pupils who took part in joinery got to design and build bird houses which they said was really fun and they look great!
Some pupil took part in computing and Esports where they learnt that you can play online gaming competitively and had a go at doing this on Minecraft – Leila was our winner! Science pupils extracted DNA and pupils who chose acting performed a dance to the APT song. Pupils who chose to take part in engineering designed a key ring and then watched how lasers followed their instructions via computer to print them out.
It was a fantastic day! Some pupils gave us feedback:
Rosie “I want to go to Grimsby college when I grow up”
Ria “It was really fun and I’d like to go back again for the whole day!”
Sofia “It has given me some ideas for what I’d like to do in my future”
This past week, we were delighted to welcome representatives from IntoUniversity who delivered an engaging and insightful careers workshop to our students. The children had a fantastic time exploring a diverse range of professions, gaining valuable insights into the worlds of civil engineers, who design and build our infrastructure; museum curators, who preserve and interpret our history and culture; and even Foley artists, who create the incredible sound effects we hear in films and television. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to broaden their horizons and consider the vast array of career paths available to them in the future.
Year 3 had a wonderful day of time travelling back to Ancient Egypt with a Portals to the Past workshop. We used primary sources to learn more about the past, played the Ancient Egyptian Hounds and Jackals game (found in Tutankhamun’s tomb) and competed in an ancient Egyptian quiz. ‘Jonesy’ knew so much about the topic and made learning fun and memorable! We finished the day with a Pharaoh’s party and untimely death which led to his mummification!
Eight very fortunate boys were chosen to represent the school at a tournament set up by Grimsby Town Foundation. The other schools were Welholme Academy G1, Welholme Academy G2, St Mary’s Primary, Macaulay Primary G1, Macaulay Primary G2 and Willows Primary.
Game 1: William Barcroft 0 v 0 Welholme Academy G2
A very tight game that probably deserved a goal in it. Welholme forced Lennon to pull off 2 outstanding saves in the early stages. Alby then released a powerful shot towards goal but the Welholme keeper got down well and parried it away. The opposition teacher complimented the performance from Lennon as he was the main reason we gained our first point.
Game 2: William Barcroft 0 v 2 Macaulay Primary G2
An unfortunate defeat for William Barcroft in their second game, who defended well as a team. Macaulay got their game after 5 minutes. Macaulay kept their relentless attacking going and their efforts resulted in a second goal as their attacker ran through and rifled the ball hard and low into the goal.
Game 3 William Barcroft 0 v 4 Willows Primary
William Barcroft suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the eventual tournament winners. Willows had a useful weapon on their team who stole the show in an attacking masterclass. The Willows striker got a hat-trick and sealed it with a magnificent solo goal, where he dribbled through our team and slotted the ball past Lennon. Mr Dawes had a quick team talk with the team and instructed the team to press more and to learn from our defeat instead of dwelling on it.
Game 4 William Barcroft 2 v 0 St Mary’s Primary
William Barcroft listened to Mr Dawes and they put in a very dominant performance against St Mary’s. They gained their first goals and the first win of the tournament. Rhys pounced on a goalmouth scramble to score his first goal for William Barcroft. Just before the final whistle, Rhys pressed the defender, stole possession and assisted Riley, who slotted the ball in the back of the net.
Game 5: William Barcroft 0 v 0 Welholme Academy G1
Another game that was very tight but William Barcroft were more in control and more likely to break the deadlock. However, it wasn’t meant to be. William Barcroft defended really well and also threatened the Welholme goal.
Game 6: William Barcroft 0 v 0 Macaulay Primary G1
The final game was another tight contest which included a number of chances. The most notable coming from Macaulay’s keeper, who nearly scored from a goal kick. However, Lennon tipped the looping ball onto the bar.
Congratulations to Willow Primary, who fully deserved to be named champions. More importantly, a massive well done to our team for their resilience, determination and sportsmanship. They represented our school impeccably and definitely learned from the experience to make them better footballers. A special mention to our outstanding parent spectators, who came to watch. So many of you attended and on behalf of the children, I would like to thank you as it certainly gave the children an experience they won’t forget.
Mr Dawes
Last week our Y5 children got to experience a hands on Viking workshop in their individual classes, allowing them to apply some of what they have already learned in lesson but also expand their knowledge by drawing on the understanding of an external expert. The activities required them to engage in physical tasks, such as working in teams to create shapes of Viking artefacts (see if you can guess what they are in the photos!) and also re-enacting scenes from a Viking legend about Gods including Thor and Loki. They might be super heroes in the Marvel universe but the original Viking legends saw some very different plots and games being played by the pair.
This week we've been joined by Carolyn and Rachel from East Marsh United, who have been sharing their knowledge and expertise to help construct our willow tunnel, which you can see in the small playground. We hope that when it grows it will be used for bird/animal watching, with our new binoculars to enhance the children's learning of the world around them, nature and nurture.
