Message from the Principal:
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our first newsletter of the summer term.
It’s been a great start, with some fabulous work on our DANCE value of community, where children have been litter picking in Grant Thorold Park, and our Eco Warriors selling Earth biscuits to raise money for their projects. As always this is a very busy term so we have given you all key dates at the bottom of this newsletter to help. Details about each event will be sent nearer the time, but dates are available now for forward planning.
We have had some complaints this week about the speed of some cars during drop offs in Barnett Place, particularly in the mornings. Please can we ask all parents and carers to ensure that speed is kept to an absolute minimum when dropping off and picking up, especially near the roundabout and school gates.
Can I check that all year 6 parents have received the letter regarding SATs week? If not, please pop into the office and we will give you a new copy. This details how the week will run, and the importance of every child attending year 6 Sats breakfast club. For this week only (Monday 12 th May-Thursday 15 th May) all children in years 3/4/5 attending breakfast club will need to come in via the music room door.
Year 5 and 6 parents please also look out for a message about purple jumpers (year 5) and leavers’ hoodies (year 6). These again will be funded by the school but we need to know sizes required. A message will be sent shortly asking for this information on Arbor.
Next week the children will be celebrating VE day. This will involve some special lessons and a (hopefully outdoor!) afternoon tea party on Friday.
Please enjoy the bank holiday weekend, hopefully in the sunshine (and with a GTFC win!) and I look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday morning.
S Sargent
Principal
Just a reminder that year 6 SATS week will be taking place from Monday 12th - Thusrday 15th May 2025. All children are required to attend breakfast club at 8am promptly. We are incredibly proud of the children and their work up to this point and we look forward to them showcasing the skills and knowledge that they have learned at William Barcroft.
If you child is absent, please contact the school office via telephone rather than the enquires email so that we can log your child's absence before the registers close.
Year 6 Attendance
At KS2, pupils who attended school nearly every day in Year 6 (with an attendance rate of 95-100%) were 1.3 times more likely to achieve the expected standard in reading, writing and maths compared to pupils who only attended 90-95% of the time.
This means missing just 10 days of year 6 reduced the likelihood of reaching the expected standard by around 25%. Pupils who attended nearly every day were 1.8 times more likely to achieve the standard than persistently absent pupils who only attend 85-90% of the time (relating to 4 -6 weeks more time in school).

WBJS Newsround from the Pupil Governors
YEAR 3
We have started our new book called James and the Giant Peach and we have already made it to chapter 6! We have completed a character description about the two rude aunts or James.
In maths we have now completed our end of unit tests on fractions. We are now finding fractions of amounts and I know 2/5 of 15 is 6.
In science we have been learning about the different types of food such as carbohydrates, fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals, water and fruit and vegetables. You should not have too much fat but it's good for energy and balanced diet.
Ethan , Year 3.
YEAR 4
In maths we have been partitioning decimals using counters to help us.
In English we have started reading a new book called The Highland Falcon Thief. So far we have learned that it is a royal train which has lots of famous people onboard.
This week in science we have been learning about the different kinds of teeth and what their jobs are.
In PE we have started our dance topic and we had to create a dance story to Little Red Riding Hood.
Poppy, Year 4.
YEAR 5
In maths we have been learning how to work out angles on a straight line. You need to remember a straight line is 180 degrees.
In English we have started reading a new book called The Lost Whale and for our big write we are going to be creating a non-chronological report about grey whales.
In French we have been learning how to say the weather.
In athletics we have been doing practicing our running, long jumps and accurate throwing.
Nevaeh-Taya, Year 5.
YEAR 6
In maths we are learning how to work out the radius, diameter and circumference of a circle and practising our arithmetic skills ready for SATS.
In whole class reading we have been reading different texts and using our range of skills to help us answer the questions for maximum marks!
We are using our classifying skills in science to see what animals fall into the mammal, birds, reptiles and amphibians category.
In music we have been using xylophones to try and copy a piece of music, then we have challenged ourselves to make our own.
In geography we have been learning about different biomes.
Joseph, Year 6.
Please can we remind all parents that children are required to read 3 times a week at home and their reading record is expected in school every day. There are a multitude of beneficial reasons why children should read at home: comfort and reassurance, confidence and security, relaxation, happiness and fun. It is essential that we are providing children with the time to explore stories, giving them time and full attention when reading them a story, asking questions to support comprehension and clear routines. Reading at home builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds imagination and even improves their sleeping patterns. Not to mention that it supports all areas of the curriculum and increases progress, development and understanding. We offer a well-stocked library and purple area which provides reading books to take home and children are rewarded when completing 3 home reads.
Thank you for your support with this.
Eco-warriors
The Eco Warriors have taken part in a litter pick at Grant Thorold Park on World Earth Day, which was supported by Carolyn and Rachel from East Marsh United. This has been a sponsored event and the children have raised over £100 to buy some nature based items such as; wild flower seeds, a hedgehog nesting box and some bird seed.

Wednesday 4th June - Parent drop in coffee morning with Compass Go
Year 6 have completed a workshop with Compass Go this week focusing on test stress. The children were given strategies which they can then hopefully apply if they begin to feel anxious in the upcoming weeks before their SATS tests. This also gave the children the opportunity to discuss any worries or concerns with the Compass Go team and their teachers.
Humberside Fire & Rescue Service Road Safety, working in partnership with Safer Roads, will be delivering a road safety session to our school. The children will learn all about the importance of car safety, particularly aimed at being a positive passenger, demonstrations of the real dangers of travelling in a vehicle where someone is not wearing a seatbelt and the 'egg helmet' demonstrates the importance of using a cycle helmet.
In Summer term 2 we will be working alongside Humberside Police 'Mini Police' project. We have chosen 10 pupils to take part in this fun and interactive engagement programme. The pupils will take part in 7 sessions and parents/carers are invited to an awards presentation at the end.

As you may already be aware, the Netflix series Adolescence has been widely discussed over the last few weeks. The show provides a powerful, and at times difficult, look at the digital pressures young people face online and the role parents have to play in their digital wellbeing.
To help, Smoothwall have created a resource page you can pass on to your parent community. It’s packed with practical advice, conversation starters, and useful insights to help parents navigate the various challenges the series brings to light.
From setting boundaries around screen time to processing upsetting online content, the resources are designed to give parents the tools and knowledge to take the next steps in supporting their child’s digital wellbeing.
As one of the more popular games with all age groups, particularly younger children, Roblox is getting its fair share of negative press lately.
Most recently (13th April) Revealing Reality have released results of their investigation called 'A Digital Playground - The Real Guide to Roblox'. As part of this investigation the researchers created multiple account pretending to be persons aged 5, 9, 10, 13 and 40+ in order to explore the safety settings and the user experience which included:
Adults and children can easily interact.
Easy access to highly suggestive environments, including participation in adult-themed conversations.
