HCIS returns to PowerSchool for Student Information System (SIS) effective 1/3/2023
Dear HCIS Families,
Beginning January 3rd, 2023, HCIS will use PowerSchool for its SIS once again.
This decision to return to PowerSchool was made with lengthy discussions among staff as well as feedback from students and families. Though we expect the return to PowerSchool to have challenges, we believe it is the best move forward to allow us to best serve our students, families, and staff.
What does this mean for my family/my student?
For students and families that were with us last year, this should be familiar to you. Your student’s account username and password will be the same and your family account username and password will be the same as before.
For our new families, we will be reaching out with instructions on how to set up your family accounts. Students will have the same username and password that they have been using with JMC and will be able to view grades for Winter Symposium right away in January.
Grades for Semester 1 will be entered into JMC and then put onto student transcripts in PowerSchool. Families should continue to log in to JMC to monitor grades for Semester 1. Report Cards for Semester 1 and Winter Symposium will be mailed out in mid January.
Winter Symposium and Semester 2 grades/attendance will be entered into PowerSchool.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mr. Dexter at mdexter@harborcityschool.org
Symposium Details: January 3-6, no school for students on Monday, Jan. 9th
Lunch Times During Symposium
Lunch A: 11:20-11:50am: Courses that meet on the 2nd & 3rd Floor
Lunch B: 12-12:30: Courses that meet on the 4th Floor
Winter Symposium Dates: Jan. 3-6, please avoid these dates for appointments
Credit award during symposium is dependent on attendance; your attendance matters in creating a sense of belonging in our community.
Symposium planning requires a lot of time and additional resources and is a valuable component of the educational and service learning program.
"4.2 Attendance Requirement for Course Credit – Maximum Total Absence Rule Course credit requirements include not only completion of all required coursework, but also participation and interaction through regular and prompt attendance. Frequent absences lead to disruption of the instructional process for the individual student, the classroom teacher and other students in the class."

Harbor City International School Board Service Opportunity
Greetings HCIS Community!
Winter is here again and the first semester of the 2022-2023 school year is winding down. Staff and students have been working together these past few months toward our common goal of academic achievement and college preparedness in a nurturing environment. We are all looking forward to December/January events including concerts, the play, symposium, and of course, winter vacation.
Each year, new members are needed to serve on the Board of Directors. This year, the Board is seeking parent candidates to fill 1 parent seat. Board terms are three years. Board members attend monthly board meetings and serve on committees (Finance, Strategic Planning, Board Development, District Advisory/Academic, Director Review, or Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism). This is a great time to get involved with HCIS!
The 2023 school board election will run from Feb 1, 2023 through February 15, 2023. You will receive more information and links to vote securely online closer to the election window.
Attached you will find more information and application materials. If you are interested in pursuing candidacy, please fill out the application and biographical statement and submit via email to the address below. If you are interested in board service or know someone who would be an asset to the board and want to discuss further or have questions, please contact Liz Holte: eholte@harborcityschool.org. Reminders on the HCIS Community Values & Policies
Cell phones and headphones, earbuds etc are used by students over the lunch hour. Remember to stow phones, headphones, earbuds in your backpack. Use = in view. Devices and headphones are not to be used during passing times. Need to text/call home or someone else during the day? Come to the office and speak with the office staff first before taking out the phone. There is also a phone in the office for student calls. Parents, if you need to reach your student during the school day, please call the office. The policies are here in the 2022 Student Handbook.
The HCIS community values are the 5R's: Respect, Relationship, Reach, Responsibility and Resilience and community members' words and actions align with these core values. Please see your College Pursuit Adviser, the Dean of Students or the Executive Director with questions on these expectations. Thank you for upholding and modeling these values in every interaction during the school day on campus, and out in the community.
Severe Weather Closing/Emergency School Closing/Early Dismissal
Harbor City International School follows the decision of the other Duluth area public schools regarding closure due to snow or other severe weather. When such a decision is made, local television and radio resources will broadcast information about the closure.
If ISD 709 schools are closed, Harbor City is closed.
Parents/Guardians who feel that severe weather conditions threaten their child’s safety even if school remains open may choose to keep their student home. The absence of a student in inclement weather will be considered the same as any absence for other legitimate reasons, given proper parental/guardian notice is provided.
In the event of an early dismissal due to severe weather or other emergency situations, parents will be notified by email, and students will be transported home via DTA. The school will remain open and supervised for any students waiting for alternate transportation home.

College Prep for Juniors!
Last Thursday's (11/3) presentation on "Colleges in the Northland" was a great success! College representatives from the College of St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the University of Wisconsin Superior, Lake Superior College, and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College were all present to share about the excellent education opportunities right here in the Twin Ports.
Click here to check out the presentation from the colleges; it provides a great overview of each college and contact information for college reps.
We hope the "Colleges in the Northland" presentation encourages all juniors to reflect further on the options that they want to pursue after high school. Now is the time to talk with your student and encourage them to research their interests. Next semester, your student can expect the following to help them plan for College & Career Readiness:
Tour the University of Minnesota Duluth
Tour the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities)
Take the ACT
One-to-one meeting(s) with Miss Carroll to discuss college and career plans
Trades Fair
Continued opportunities to meet with college reps, armed forces, etc.
Be sure to check out our website and the Junior Checklist.

Dec. 13th, Northwood Technical College visits HCIS
A college representative from Northwood Technical College in Superior will be on campus to visit with students during CP, 11:18-12:00.
Northwood Technical College specializes in manufacturing programs such as welding, machine tool technician, and industrial maintenance technician. Learn more by visiting their website.
Attendance matters are related to our missions's sense of belonging and academic excellence, please review this policy:
4.4 Multiple Absences Leading to Loss of Credit in a Semester
As students accrue multiple absences, a representative of the school will make reasonable efforts to notify parents and guardians that the student will lose credit for course work when the student reaches 15 absences (excused or unexcused) in a course in a semester. In addition, parents or guardians will be encouraged to meet with teachers and the Director to resolve any issues or to correct problems that may be contributing to a high number of absences.
Following 15 absences in a course , the Director will make reasonable efforts to inform the student’s parents or guardians that the student will lose credit for a course or courses in which the student has accrued 15 absences. See Mr Tydlacka for details on the appeals process.
The Harbor City International School’s Board of Directors believe that regular school attendance is directly related to success in academic work. Regular attendance develops habits of dependability important to students’ future success.
In accordance with the regulations of the State Department of Education and the Minnesota Mandatory Attendance Law, students are required to attend all assigned classes and/or study halls every day school is in session.

If you'd like to eat a school lunch: Order your lunch using the Google form in your student HCIS email. Pay for your lunch in the office with cash or check or go to the Harbor City website Square Payment. Lunch is $3.95; breakfast is $1.50.
If you did not order a lunch and your name is not on the list, please inform the lunchroom manager and wait until the students who ordered go through the line before picking up a lunch.
If you'd like to bring a lunch, label it and put it in the refrigerator on the 4th floor.
DTA Bus Pass:
If you need a bus pass, stop in the main office. If you lose your bus pass, go to the school's main office with the lost pass fee of $5.00 and we will order a new pass for you. You must go to the school office to arrange a new pass. You will pick up a replacement pass at the DTC down the block after the school office notifies you that the pass is ready. Have questions? Go to the main office, room 311.
Don't take the bus? You may get monthly parking reimbursement by filling out the form and attaching the receipts. The forms are outside of the office near the AED machine.
The School Day Basics:
Arrive before 8:20 am, hats/hoods off upon entering the building on MI St. (except on Hat Fridays) and be ready to learn in your classroom at 830am when the bell rings. If you are late, head to the office for a late pass. Students who need help managing their time will be assigned to a period of reflection over the lunch hour. Arriving on time to class is one way of conveying respect to your classmates and your teacher.

HARBOR CITY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL POLICY No. 4.12
Fragrance Free Policy
I. PURPOSE
Fragranced products can cause some people with chronic illnesses to suffer additional
symptoms and medical expenses. Symptoms include asthma, allergies, sinus problems,
rhinitis, and migraine headaches. Given that chemically sensitive individuals may react to
different fragranced products with widely varying degrees of severity, it is very difficult to
ensure a consistently comfortable and accommodating learning and work environment.
However, it is the intent of Harbor City International School (HCIS) to minimize the
difficulties experienced in the school building by employees, students, parents, and
community members subject to chemical and fragrance sensitivities.
II. GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY
The HCIS building shall remain free of scented products. These products include but are not
limited to: perfume, cologne, aftershave, body spray, scented lotion, fragranced hair spray,
room deodorizers, and air fresheners.
III. NOTIFICATION OF POLICY VIOLATION
Notification of violation of this policy shall be submitted to the HCIS Director.
IV. NOTICE
This policy shall appear in the student handbook, and notice will be posted in all
classrooms, common rooms, and on the front door of the HCIS building.
