MCA FAQs:
Do I have to take it? Why?
- Yes. The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) is the only academic assessment that the state uses to evaluate the effectiveness of schools. The tests do not only measure proficiency but also use prior test scores to measure growth over time.
Is the test timed?
- No, the test is not timed. You can take as long as you need to complete the test.
Can the test be spread over more than one day?
- Yes. Definitely yes. If the student is fading, getting bored, lost, sick it is usually better to stop the test and pick it up the next session.
Do exchange students have to take the test?
- No. The student could take the assessment and the test will be scored, but it will not be included the school's results.
Can the student leave as soon as they are done with the test?
- No. The student can read a paper book or work quietly on other pencil and paper work.
Snacks? Breaks?
- Yes, there will be some snacks and the students can take breaks. We will be encouraging students to take a break or two during testing.
Headphones?
- yes for the math and science tests. The questions can be read to the student. The students are welcome to use their own headphones and the school has some truly old-school headphones.
Headphones are not allowed on the reading test.
Do students get to find out how they did?
- Yes. Upon completion of the test the results are reported to the school within an hour or two, depending on how busy the testing servers are.
Can I practice?
- There are some item samplers and very short tutorials on how the test works. The item samplers are not really practice tests, they just give you an idea of how the test looks.
- Read, Read, Read!
