K-1 Learning Targets and Overview of Learning Experiences
Cedar kindergarten learners are scheduled for one or two 45-minute physical education class each week. First grade learners have physical education for one or two 45-minute period per week. The following section shows the learning targets for each grade level for each of the major content areas of physical education: dance, gymnastics, games and physical activity/physical fitness.
Dance
Grade one: Students will create and perform movements to music with varied tempo.
Kindergarten: Students will learn to perform a variety of cultural/folk and creative dances.
All grade level dancers will respond to music by creating locomotor and nonlocomotor movements, with varied forces (e.g., suddenly, sustained, strongly and lightly, freely and bound), in general and personal space (through different pathways, directions, levels, planes, areas and extensions), while relating to a partner/group and to music.
Gymnastics
Grade one: Students will create and perform a safe gymnastics sequence that includes jumping/landing, balance at high, medium and low levels, and rotation.
Kindergarten: Students will learn to perform a safe gymnastics sequence that includes jumping/landing, balance and rotation.
Games
Grade one: Students will develop the following game/sport skills: locomotor movement (running, skipping, hopping, jumping, galloping, sliding); overhand throwing and catching; volleying (serving, setting and forearm passing); and striking with a hockey stick.
Kindergarten: Students will develop the following game/sport skills: locomotor movement (running, skipping, hopping, jumping, galloping, sliding); overhand throwing and catching; volleying (serving, setting and forearm passing); and striking with a hockey stick.
Physical activity/Physical Fitness
All students will participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity and take part in experiences that build muscle fitness, cardiorespiratory endurance, and flexibility within these dance, gymnastics and games units.
