Code Talker
goodreads Rating: 3.91/5 stars
Throughout World War II, in the conflict fought against Japan, Navajo code talkers were a crucial part of the U.S. effort, sending messages back and forth in an unbreakable code that used their native language. They braved some of the heaviest fighting of the war, and with their code, they saved countless American lives. Yet their story remained classified for more than twenty years.
Joseph Bruchac brings their stories to life for young adults through the riveting fictional tale of Ned Begay, a sixteen-year-old Navajo boy who becomes a code talker. His grueling journey is eye-opening and inspiring. This deeply affecting novel honors all of those young men, like Ned, who dared to serve, and it honors the culture and language of the Navajo Indians.
Fun Fact: Code talkers served in World War I. These 1918 code talkers left a lasting impression on the U.S. Military. For more information on Native Americans in the military, visit the National Museum of the American Indian website.

November's book of the month honors our own Mark Twain, who was born November 30, 1835
Joan of Arc
(Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc)
goodreads Rating: 4.11/5 stars
"I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none." --Mark Twain
A serious, impassioned, meticulously researched story about a compelling heroine, Twain viewed the work both as a bid to be accepted as a serious writer and as a gift of love to his favorite daughter, Susy, who would die tragically three months after Joan of Arc was published. The novel is presented as a translation (by "Jean Francois Alden") of memoirs by Louis de Conte, a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc's page, Louis de Contes.
Twain was fascinated by Joan of Arc, and his interest began in the 1850s when he found a leaf from her biography. Joan of Arc differs from Twain's other works in its tone, flow, and lack of humor.

There are some books that leave a lasting impression. They might kept us up all night, or have memorable characters that we just can't forget. Maybe they taught us a lesson we want to remember. Memorable Reads are books someone thinks everyone should read. Whatever the reason, these are some of our HPS 60 Memorable Reads.
Memorable Read-
Ms. Ellis, Oakwood Elementary
Why Surviving the Angel of Death is on Mrs. Ellis' must read list:
This is a real eye opener. I read it every year to my students and they really enjoy it as well. It gives the reader a first hand glimpse inside the Nazi concentration camps. This is written from a child's perspective. I had the privilege to hear the author speak in person and she was phenomenal. I highly recommend this book.
If you would like to learn more, you can watch this "Forgiving Dr. Mengele" video from Ball State University Libraries.
Eva Mozes Kor was 10 years old when she arrived in Auschwitz. While her parents and two older sisters were taken to the gas chambers, she and her twin, Miriam, were herded into the care of the man known as the Angel of Death, Dr. Josef Mengele and subjected to sadistic medical experiments and forced to fight daily for their own survival. Through this book, readers will learn of a child's endurance and survival in the face of truly extraordinary evil. The book also includes an epilogue on Eva's recovery from this experience and her remarkable decision to publicly forgive the Nazis. Through her museum and her lectures, she has dedicated her life to giving testimony on the Holocaust, providing a message of hope for people who have suffered, and working toward goals of forgiveness, peace, and the elimination of hatred and prejudice in the world.
