What is Special Education?
Special education is instruction designed to meet the educational needs of children with disabilities and to provide them the opportunity to reach their full potential. It was put into place because of the IDEA Act.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA) was established by the government to ensure that children with disabilities have instruction that meets their unique needs. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is
the federal law that requires public schools to provide a Free Appropriate Public Education(FAPE) to children with disabilities.
What are the areas of special education?
IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) has categorized 13 different disabilities that qualify for special education services.
* Visual Impairment
* Speech and Language Impairment
* Auditory Impairment
* Deaf/Blind
* Autism (ASD)
* Developmental Disabilities (mental retardation)
* Multiple Disabilities
* Orthopedic Impairment (Physical)
* Specific Learning Disabilities
* Emotional/Behavior Disorder
* Traumatic Brain Injury
* Multi-sensory Impairment
* Serious Health Impairments
A child who is identified under one of the categories may be eligible for special education services.
How does the special education process work?
The special education process begins with a referral from either a parent or a school staff member. The referral is reviewed and with parental permission, the student may be evaluated to determine if a disability exists. If the
student meets eligibility criteria for special education services, the IEP team then develops an individual education plan.

What should my role be in the delivery of a special program for my child?
As a parent it is very important to maintain positive communication with your child's school and teachers. Keep your child's teacher informed and up to date on any changes in day to day activity and lifestyles that may affect their
learning (changes in medications, specialized medical equipment, etc). Try to maintain similar expectations at home and school.
What is an IEP?
The IEP generally includes:
* A description of the learning disabled student's current skill levels based on formal assessment;
* Measurable and observable goals for improvement in each area of educational need;
* Measurable and observable objectives describing specific skills needed to reach IEP goals;
* What types of specially designed instruction will be provided;
* When, where, and for how long specially designed instruction will be provided; and
* Additional, related services the student will need to support specially designed instruction.
