Hampton City Schools Fine Arts Department presents the FREE series in conjunction with Arts for Learning, the Virginia Affiliate of Young Audiences.  School-age children and families can interact with musicians, artists, actors, storytellers, dancers, and more. Each weekend has new programming! With the support of the Hampton History Museum, the series will be held on three Saturdays in July.

Move to the Filipino “Dance of the Duck,” celebrate African American history with Frederick Douglass, listen to instruments from around the world, be awed by colorful Rainbow Puppets, or make your own puppets to take home!




Rainbow Puppets, Animal Parade

Rainbow Puppets introduce children to animals through songs about their homes, how they

live, and what they eat.


Jackie Adonis, Itik Itik: Filipino Dance

Learn an energetic and engaging traditional Filipino dance—the Dance of the Duck—where

audience members will come together and create their own special moves.


Nathan Richardson: Building Strong Children with Frederick Douglass

Nathan Richardson delivers a remarkable portrayal of former slave, writer, orator, and

abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who recites an excerpt from his most famous speech and

emphasizes the importance of reading, writing, learning history, and developing civic

responsibility.


Curtis Blues, The Multicultural Roots of Rock and Rap

Curtis Blues shows how different cultures built instruments from their unique environments

and how they still influence the music we listen to today.

In this workshop that’s been a hit from the very first Splash of the Arts, children will get their

creative juices flowing by making puppets they can take home with them.


Dylan Pritchett, Essential African Threads

As he shares the hidden meanings of traditional slave tales such as Brer Rabbit and Anansi the

Spider, storyteller Dylan Pritchett brings the early days of slavery to life in this program that

celebrates African American history.

Gary Garlic, Caribbean Dreaming

Sail the Caribbean seas on the sound waves of steel drums! Percussionist Gary Garlic

demonstrates the unique sound of these instruments and explains how this new art form was

invented after drums were outlawed on many Caribbean islands.

Step into the captivating world of improv through this dynamic and interactive exploration of

drums—which weigh up to 200 pounds—in an unforgettable journey that explores the different

Using fun artwork as inspiration, poet Stephanie Lask guides children in writing and illustrating

simple poems that they can take home with them.

Actor Ryan Clemens brings to life his famous relative, Mark Twain, offering humorous insights

Fall under the spell of a tricky magician, explore the legends of Mount Everest through dance and music, laugh out loud to multicultural folktales, be inspired by a powerful story of escape to freedom, and get up and dance across the continents.




Harold Wood, I Can Do It

Magician Harold Wood juggles and participates in sleight-of-hand tricks in this crowd-pleasing

show that teaches about self-esteem and self-reliance—and features a surprise guest (hint: he

loves carrots!)


Brandy Lee, STEAM Bookmarks

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM in the 19th Century Gallery


Participants will make a bookmark using the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math)

design process, with a little bit of help from their own creativity!


Via Goode, Goode Travels

Storyteller Via Goode shares multicultural folktales full of humor and surprises, transporting the

audience through foreign lands while they help her tell each story with refrains, chants, and

songs.


Utpalasia: Dancing in the Shadows of Everest

Utpalasia explores the lore, legends, and land of the beautiful Himalayan mountains. Through

dance, music, and storytelling, audience members learn about the people of Nepal and the

connection between culture and community.


Asiko-oluwa Aderin, Mixed Media Interactive

In this fun, hands-on workshop, participants will create a mixed media work of art, such as

designing a personal mandala or an African Kente cloth.

Actor Valerie Davis brings to life the uniquely American story of Martha Ann Fields, an enslaved

cook and one of Virgina’s unsung heroes in this powerful program of freedom and
