Summer Learning Academy 2024
Hampstead School District is proud to be able to offer a variety of unique programs to any resident of Hampstead entering Grades 1-8. All programs below will run Monday - Thursday. Hours are HMS 8-11am, HCS 8:30-11:30am

Please only register for sessions that your child will able to attend so that we can extend these opportunities to as many students as possible. Many of our programs will have waitlists this summer, if you have a change in plans and are unable to attend please notify SLA coordinator Ms. Kaddie Gallant (gallantk@hampsteadschools.net) so that we may release a spot to someone else.
New this year we are pleased to announce that the NEW! Heaven's Kitchen Mobile Food Truck (in collaboration with the Alexander Eastman Foundation) will bring quality, nutritious meals to children for FREE on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays after our SLA program dismisses! Registration is not required so children simply need to show up (Truck will be located at St. Anne's Parking Lot 11:30-12pm) and request a meal. There is one meal selection per day consisting of a milk, fruit, vegetable, grain and protein. Please let the Food Truck staff know if there is a food allergy. We will post weekly menus in advance in various locations online.
Week 1: July 8 -11
First Grade Fun - Session 1 Week 1 (For Students Entering Grade 1 - Located at HCS)
Welcome all students who are getting ready for first grade! This is a perfect opportunity for half day kindergarten students, students coming back to HCS for first grade, or any current kindergarten students who would like to continue their fun and learning over the summer as they prepare for first grade with Ms. Pekalsky and Ms. Gallant. This is a 8 day program that spans two weeks of SLA! There are two sessions, you may sign up for both session for a total of 16 days!

Camp Invention Grades 1-4. (For Students Entering 1st - 4th Grades - Located at HCS)
Mr. Terille and Mr. Jaques will guide our students in these STEAM modules that unlock students imagination and engineering skills! During Module # 1 PLOT COASTERS - Participants fasten their seat belts, design epic roller coasters and write a bestselling story during their Plot Coasters adventure! As they rise, fall, twist and turn along a creative writing track, they make comparisons to a roller coaster track. Throughout the program, children explore the elements of a story and conduct hands-on physics investigations as they build amazing roller coasters! During Module # 2 RESQUE SQUAD - Children join the Rescue Squad, a gamified eco-adventure where inventing, engineering and quick thinking are used to solve major environmental problems and restore nature’s balance. Students report to different locations across the continent to receive missions. They accomplish the phases of their operations, level up to new challenges and show the world how small changes can make a big difference to restore balance on planet Earth.
Elementary Play Based Literacy Camp - Beach Theme! (For Students Entering 2nd-4th Grades - Located at HCS)
Students entering grades 1-4 will have an opportunity to practice the five components of literacy through hands-on activities, outdoor adventures, and lots of fun games! This summer camp will enhance students' foundational reading skills through fun activities to develop life-long reading habits. We will explore underwater environments, learn about ocean animals, celebrate learning, participate in beach literacy games, learn about sun safety, review phonemic awareness activities, and reading skills using Haggerty, UFLI, and Orton-Gillingham methods.

TinkerCAD 3D Printing Adventure Camp (For Students Entering 5th-8th Grades - Located at HMS)
Students will be introduced to the exciting world of 3D printing technology. Our goal is to provide a fun and engaging learning experience while teaching the basic skills of TinkerCad, a popular 3D design software. The Mission: Provide students with an opportunity to showcase their creativity, innovation, and teamwork as they apply their newfound knowledge and skills to produce 3D-printed designs. Our daily breakdown of lessons and projects will enable students to gain mastery over the TinkerCAD 3D drawing environment. Students will learn key concepts and skills in developing 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. During week #1 they will create mini marvels, speedy cars, and keychains. **Please only sign up for ONE session **

First Grade Fun - Session 1 Week 2 (For Students Entering Grade 1 - Located at HCS)
Welcome all students who are getting ready for first grade! This is a perfect opportunity for half day kindergarten students, students coming back to HCS for first grade, or any current kindergarten students who would like to continue their fun and learning over the summer as they prepare for first grade with Ms. Pekalsky and Ms. Gallant. Students entering grades 1-4 will have an opportunity to practice the five components of literacy through hands-on activities, outdoor adventures, and lots of fun games! This summer camp will enhance students' foundational reading skills through fun activities to develop life-long reading habits. We will Learn about wildlife, participate in campfire stories, learn about campfire safety, explore wilderness, celebrate learning , review phonemic awareness activities, and reading skills using Heggerty, UFLI, and Orton-Gillingham method reading strategies.

Students will participate in hands-on activities to explore mathematics and science in their everyday lives! Some activities you can expect to participate in are making your own ice cream and testing the reaction of Mentos in different types of soda! Please note that both weeks are the same activities, so no need to sign up twice! **Please only sign up for ONE week/session **
The Science of Cooking (For Students Entering Grades 6th-8th - Located at HMS)
Join Mrs. Griffin and explore the Science of Cooking, with each day learning about the science of a particular recipe and work hands on to bring the recipe to life! There will be a cooking competition on the last day, judged by Jim Carey from the Saint Anne's Food Pantry.

Elementary Play Based Literacy Camp - Olympics Theme! (For Students Entering 1st - 4th Grades - Located at HCS)
Students entering grades 1-4 will have an opportunity to practice the five components of literacy through hands-on activities, outdoor adventures, and lots of fun games! This summer camp will enhance students' foundational reading skills through fun activities to develop life-long reading habits. We will learn about different Olympic sports, learn about teamwork and sportsmanship, participate in literacy themed races, enhance phonemic awareness, and improve reading comprehension skills using Heggerty, Orton-Gillingham, and UFLI methods.

Seussical Storytellers Summer Camp (For Students Entering Grades 3rd-5th - Location TBD)
Join Mr. Jacques for a week full of Seussical fun with reading, writing, and poetry based on popular children's author, Dr. Seuss.

Financial Literacy and Investing (For Students Entering Grades 5th-8th - Location TBD)
During this week students will join Mr. Jacques and will manage a virtual portfolio, buying and selling stocks using real-time market data to simulate actual trading conditions. Throughout the program, they will compete to grow their investments, gaining valuable insights into financial markets. Students will also learn to keep up with market trends and current news, understanding how global events impact stock prices. Additionally, they will discover how to build a portfolio tailored to their risk appetite and growth needs, learning to balance risk and reward based on different life scenarios. This hands-on activity promotes financial literacy, critical thinking, and teamwork, making learning both fun and practical.
