The four years spent in high school can make graduation seem like a long way away. In reality, time flies! It’s best to start early when preparing plans for college and beyond.
It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and unprepared. But all you really need is a plan! Our faculty and staff are here to help you every step of the way.
Below is a checklist of what you should accomplish during your sophomore year and when:
Prepare for the PSAT/SAT
Plan to take both the ACT and SAT at least once by February of your Junior year. Retake the one with the best score in order to meet college admission or scholarship criteria.
Create strong study habits and plan for classes
Decide whether or not you are going to take any dual enrollment classes. Meet with HDA Academic Specialist to discuss the necessary steps, if you choose to take any dual enrollment classes.
For those interested in dual enrollment, talk to an academic advisor about eligibility and prepare to take the PERT test at Lake Sumter or Seminole State College.
Attend an orientation session with our HDA Academic Specialist to discuss your high school plans and goals. Discuss what your options are after completion of high school.
Maintain a high GPA
Grades should be your top priority!
Take the PSAT in October
The PSAT will be administered to all juniors in October. The results will be back in December. This is preparation for the SAT (Stanford Achievement Test) in April.
Make sure to identify dates for the Spring SAT tests and register for them.
Create a college list
Meet with your HDA Academic Specialist to discuss your college list and college applications.
Visit prospective colleges
Attend a check-up session with our academic specialist to make sure you are on track.
Maintain a high GPA
Grades should be your top priority!
Take the official SAT test.
Gather paperwork required for college applications
Create a resume and put together a portfolio.
Start working on scholarship applications, essays, and any other things that may be required for college entrance.
Start thinking about teachers or mentors to request letters of recommendation.
Keep all the information you gather organized in a file box or online.
This will include all material you receive from colleges and all material you send to them, such as reference letters, essays, and test scores.
Open accounts in online college application portals.
