Linguistics for Language Teachers (ESL 8100)
A Free Functional Introduction to Linguistics
Purpose:
This course provides students with an understanding of the basic concepts of and analytical tools for the study of language and culture. Since all graduate students and language teachers not only transmit existing knowledge about a language but also need to be capable of creating their own analyses in response to new linguistic issues, it is essential that students and teachers know about all linguistic core areas and their concurrent investigative procedures. In connection with this dual program goal of educating students as language (1) teachers (2), I would like to state two course goals that will be intertwined throughout the course: teach linguistics and teach graduate student/professional research skills.
