applying background knowledge
using phonics strategies to understand words in context
cross-checking context, word and sentence structure and phonics to pronounce and understand unfamiliar words
self-correcting when written materials do not make sense
read to acquire, remember and apply information by:
building vocabulary through context clues and discussion
retelling or writing about what he or she has read
extend understanding by making inferences from printed materials by:
drawing simple conclusions
understanding explicitly stated ideas
relating content to his or her experiences
read aloud with fluency and expression by:
