This year your child will:

• understand and select different reading skills and strategies including:

  • using pictures and patterns in stories to understand written materials

  • applying background knowledge

  • using phonics strategies to understand words in context

  • cross-checking context, word and sentence structure and phonics to pronounce and understand unfamiliar words

  • self-correcting when written materials do not make sense

• read to acquire, remember and apply information by:

  • building vocabulary through context clues and discussion

  • retelling or writing about what he or she has read

• extend understanding by making inferences from printed materials by:

  • drawing simple conclusions

  • understanding explicitly stated ideas

  • relating content to his or her experiences

• read aloud with fluency and expression by:

  • building meaning by reading aloud to self

  • using appropriate phrasing and attending to punctuation
