Please notify Mrs. Wiederholt by September 3rd if you do not want your child to participate in this lesson.
--------
As your child’s school counselor I will be teaching K-4th grade classes a very important lesson about safety. Students will learn that their most important job is to keep themselves safe.
This lesson will focus on child abuse prevention and will be taught in a developmentally appropriate, sensitive and kid-friendly way. During the lesson, students will learn that they are the boss of their body and they (and only they!) decide who can touch them, when and where. We will learn about three types of touches: safe touch, ouch touch and private touch. Safe touches are wanted and make us feel happy, excited and proud. Examples of safe touches include hugs, high fives, and pats on the back. Ouch touches happen when someone hurts our body. They make us feel scared, hurt, sad and mad. Examples of ouch touches are hitting, kicking, pushing and punching. Private touches are unwanted touches to our private parts or to someone else’s private parts. Students will learn that the private parts of their body are the parts that their bathing suit/underwear cover.
We will discuss that it is against the law for grown-ups to give us ouch touches or private touches, and they must be reported to a safe person we trust right away.
As you can understand these topics are VERY important, but also have a very sensitive nature. You can find this material on my webpage under “Safe Touches Material”. If you would like to opt your child out of this lesson for any reason, please let me know by September 3rd. Also, it is critical that your child knows how to stay safe and who they can talk to if they need anything. I respect your decision either way on how you would like to proceed with this lesson, but I do encourage you to make sure they are taught this important lesson either from someone that is safe and trusted. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you so much for your support!
