What to Expect in English 

In English, students can expect to:

• Read and Analyze Literature: Explore novels, plays, short stories, and poetry from both American and world literature, with a focus on understanding theme, characterization, symbolism, and author’s purpose.
  
  

• Strengthen Informational Reading Skills: Practice analyzing nonfiction, speeches, and articles to evaluate arguments, evidence, and rhetoric.
  
  

• Develop Writing Skills: Write narrative, argumentative, and informative essays with an emphasis on organization, clarity, grammar, and style.
  
  

• Build Vocabulary and Language Knowledge: Study words in context and learn how word choice impacts meaning and tone.
  
  

• Engage in Speaking and Listening: Participate in class discussions, presentations, and collaborative projects to develop confidence in communication.
  
  

• Prepare for the NC End-of-Course (EOC) Exam: Practice close reading, analysis, and test-taking strategies to be ready for the state assessment at the end of the year.
