About Third Grade in North Carolina

Third grade is an important milestone year in North Carolina. Scholars grow as independent learners, strengthen their reading, writing, and math skills, and explore exciting topics in science and social studies.

One of the most important parts of third grade is the Read to Achieve law, which ensures that all students are reading at or above grade level by the end of the year. Scholars will take part in daily reading instruction, small-group support, and assessments to monitor progress toward this goal. Reading is at the heart of everything we do—it’s the foundation for learning across all subjects.

In Math, scholars work with multiplication and division, fractions, area and perimeter, and data analysis. They learn to solve real-world problems using logical reasoning and multiple strategies.

In Science, scholars explore properties of matter, forces and motion, ecosystems, weather, and the solar system. Lessons include hands-on investigations, experiments, and STEM-based learning.

In Social Studies, scholars study communities, local and state government, economics, geography, and how cultures shape the world we live in.

Families are essential partners in third grade. You can help your child succeed by reading together daily, practicing math facts, discussing what they’ve learned, and encouraging curiosity about the world.

Our goal is for every scholar to leave third grade confident, prepared, and ready for the exciting challenges of fourth grade and beyond!
