This quarter, scholars will dive into Module 1 of our Arts and Letters reading program. Scholars will build knowledge of the physical and emotional complexities of the heart as they explore the power of language to help people understand complex ideas and emotions. The essential question: What does having a great heart mean?, will be explored throughout the module.
With the world of poetry, scholars will examine figurative language and learn how to use it to contrast a literal and figurative heart! We will use the novel "Love That Dog" by Sharon Creech, along with a variety of other poems, to study the structure of poetry and the beauty behind the words. Scholars will feel comfortable reading and writing their own poetry.
During center times, scholars will have additional practice with these poetry skills as well as developing their fluency, vocabulary, summarization, use of textual evidence, use of text structures, writing, and small group instruction.
