Mākoha is a community event celebrating Māori arts and whānau connection. We attended and supported the event and have made some great connections
"For me carving Pounamu is a continual journey that has led me to discover much about my heritage, homeland and profound respect for this beautiful stone which is hard as steel."
Meet Andrew McGregor,
Of Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe and Waitaha decent. Originally from the West Coast of the South Island now living in Rural North Canterbury. After learning how to carve in 2005 he earned his certificate in jade and hard stone carving at Tai Poutini Polytechnic. After a long time in production carving, he built his own business ‘Jaded’ carving a wide range of jewellery designs and sculptural pieces. You may have seen his mahi on Prince Harry when he visited Aotearoa last year! He is massively inspired by ancient cultures and their art forms. Primarily Māori, Celtic, Viking, Asian and Mesoamerican. Carving pounamu is an ongoing journey for Andrew and is always learning and growing. You can check out his mahi at Jaded and Instagram @Jade.maker .
